I am going to order a new card soon....like next week....

I really was planning on getting a 7900GT, a good cooler and ramsinks, and overclocking it....maybe even the volt mod to make it run GTX speeds since I will have capable cooling. About $350 for the entire setup...

BUT, here is the dilemma....I run 1680x1050 as much as possible, with all the good IQ stuff on, I will leave AA lower if necessary but I hate losing the crispness of the native res....

Would splurging the extra $150 for the 512mb GTX be worth it? That's $500 bucks! Convince me it is worth it...cuz right now I am leaning heavily to the 256mb GT since either of these cards won't be top of the lie in 6 mos anyway....:o

If you're looking to get a really good card and hold off more than a year.. i'd get that new 7950gx2 or whatever it's called. $600, 2 gpus, 1 gig of ram. That'll hold you off for a year, maybe a little longer.

Have you considered the 512mb 7900 GT's that have recently appeared on the market?

Apparently they aren't available in the USA at the moment, but that's nothing consumer pressure cannot change (email newegg/etc and gainward/xpertvision/sparkle, ask them why they aren't selling the product in the USA).

Here in Australia they represent fantastic bang-for-the-buck.

What would be the difference between a 7900GT with 512mb and a 7900GTX with 512mbs.

Pretty much just the maximum attainable clock speeds for the ram and core (because of the chip design as well as the cooling). Im sure there are other differences but thats what it all comes down to.

Personally, I think you would have to be mad to purchase a 7900 GTX instead of one of these cards.

There is $400 difference (Australian) in price between these cards and a 7900 GTX.

Lot's of people have been able to get the cards up to 600mhz, some to 625mhz, without doing a thing with the stock cooling.

I upgraded from a 7800GTX to a 7900GT 512 megs
The model i have it's the Gainward Bliss 7900GT
I can tell you that COD 2, with the extra 256 megs it's damm smooth.I normaly play online, and now i can play with 4xaa on the menu, Trilinear, all options maxed out, and it's smooth as butter
You will not see mutch diference in benchmarking 3D marks. It will go up for a few 3D marks, but in game is pretty sweet
The drawbacks of this particular card are at the moment:
-Noisy.It is really loud.A diferent cooler it's on the cards
-OC.Again, the cooler is the culprit.Does not have a lot of headroom for OC at this moment, but frankly, it does not need it
BTW, i try to play all my games on 1280x1024 when possible, with all the maximum AA and AF
COD2 online i play 1024x768 all maxed out

It allows you to use CaptNKILL's texture pack for oblivion :D

I'd say skip the 512MB cards and get a eVGA 7900GT Signature Series for $400. I love the crap out of this card and it overclocks like mad just on it's stock heatsink/fan, I'm running it artifact and problem free @ 650/1800, so that's faster than most GTX's even. I get ~8500 3dmarks in 3dmark2k5 and ~5300 3dmarks in 3dmark2k6. All my games run fantastic @ 1600x1200 w/ forced 16XAF on and now I'm actually using 4X AA on alot of games now. The only game that doesn't run as fast as I'd like it is of course Oblivion, but it does run noticably faster than my 7800GTX ever did.

Plus you get lifetime warranty with overnight prepaid shipping replacement if anything ever happens to it, and you get to pick out a free game from 2006. Definitely worth the $400 imo and I wouldn't have gone with a GTX for any reason, I'm very happy with my purchase.

DarkOneX, that score on 3DM05 seems kind of low to me.Look at mine without any oc on the card.
U sure thats the only points you get?

Yes I'm sure and no I didn't have vsync on etc. I think it's all because you have AMD and I have Intel to be honest.

Just got the same card for 270 what a bargain. Sold my old 7800GT GLH 512mb for 250 so bit of a bargain.

Must admit though it is def more louder but the performance is top notch.

One other thing I think these cards are borked 7900GTX's downclocked and locked. Mine wont overclock an inch!! Not tried Gainward's Expert tool yet so might be able. It is a Golden Sample so is guaranteed to O/C some. Will let u know.

Cheers

Update.

Tried Gainward Experttool and enhanced mode is stock speed!!!

Used manual overclock in NVteak and got core to 630 and mem to 1.5 stable. However it only gave me about 5% increase so not really worth it.

The mem crapped out at anything above 1.5 but I am a happy chappy at stock.

This card smokes and in all games I've tried the gameplay is ultra smooth at highest resolutions and with everthing maxed out.

It even runs FEAR at 1280x1024 (modded file) at this setting no sweat.

Bring it on!!!!!!!!!!

I would think you should be able to run it @ 1600x1200 max settings no sweat, being that I do and my card has half the ram, and you have a better CPU than me.

You're right Dazz my LCD won't go higher than 1280x1024.

I can now play with 6xAA & 16xAF no sweat and it it is very nice. Although in FEAR I have to turn it down to 4xAA & 8xAF LOL.

This is a freakingly good card. Games.. bring it on!!!!

:D
