Hello,
I'm planing to build a server, since my old one died :( ...

The purpose of the server is to run Mysql and php, and basically act as my test server.(for web design..etc)

I'm planning to leave my server up 24hrs and since its in my bedroom i want to keep the noise as low as possible :D

Now one problem is money... :o i can't spend more then $1300 (CND)!

So does anyone have any recommandation for a server ??

I was thinking to go for a Opteron or Xeon, but the motherboards for the two CPU's, and the Memory are not cheap!

my old server was a p4, it had a passive cooling... and i was running SUSE 10 on it :(..

first off, if its between opteron or xeon, definitely opteron! xeon would heat your room like a space heater and you would definitely need a decent fan to keep it cool. id go for a passive SB mobo (socket 939 mobo) with a socket 939 opteron. 2GB of pc3200 ECC memory would be good. you might even want to look into a mobo with onboard video, as its going to be a server. then a WD raptor to top it off and youd have a nice machine

AMD Opteron 148 2.2 GHz Socket 940 1MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) $318.00
AMD Opteron 246 2.0 GHz Socket 940 1MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) $222.00
AMD Opteron 248 2.2 GHz Socket 940 1MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) $273.00
AMD Opteron 250 2.4 GHz Socket 940 1MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) $399.00
AMD Opteron 270 Dual Core 2 GHz Socket 940 2MB L2 Cache (Retail Box) $1,099.00

and for MOBO:
Asus K8N-DRE Socket 940 $424.99
Asus K8N-DL Socket 940 $299.00

Memory:

as long as the motherboards are ATX form factor, then yes they will fit. could you find any socket 939 opterons?
