Woot! Several sources (google LG Blue Ray HDDVD Combo)
From One Such Post : http://reviews.cnet.com/4531-10921_7-6465507.html
Reuters is reporting that LG Electronics is planning to launch a "universal player" capable of playing HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs. The player, which (according to an analyst quoted by Reuters) would be released in the fall, would give consumers a futureproof upgrade option to next-generation high-definition optical discs while effectively allowing them to remain neutral as the format war between the two camps continues to rage.
Toshiba's first HD-DVD player, the HD-XA1, is scheduled to hit stores on or around March 28. Blu-ray players from Samsung, Sony, and Pioneer are scheduled to become available starting May 23, and Sony's PlayStation 3--which will play Blu-ray movies in addition to next-generation video games--has now been officially slated for a November 2006 worldwide release. While a universal player would be welcome news to videophiles, LG has yet to confirm pricing, availability, or even a model number for the supposed player. However, the combo player would be a logical step forward based on last week's news that the company was cancelling its previously announced Blu-ray-only player and backing HD-DVD in addition to Blu-ray. We have a call in to LG asking for further confirmation and clarification, and we'll pass along any news as soon as it arrives.
Wow thats excellent that we are getting a player that can play both formats so early.

THANK GOD.
Hopefully this will limit the future retarded discussions about which is better.
Yay lets argue about optical media!!!11 :wonder:

But Blu-Ray is better why would anyone still contest this fact. Who wants to argue. Bring it on.
A 100+ GB hard disk for about 99$ (or less) is still better ;)
Optical media didn't progress linearly with other mass memory devices.
Plus, all this "next gen" drive still use some crappy lossy formats that reconstruct frames instead of storing them individually. Hopefully HVD will fix that. For now, I'll pass...

Don't hold your breath guys. I read (can't find the link now, still looking) that one of the formats (HD or BR) "terms of use" for drive manufactures was that it could not be used in a combo drive config -must be the one sony is backing LOL.
Also the source of that article, from reuters is 404.
I hope I'm wrong but until the author of the cnet article can get confirmation from LG, start breathing again.

combo drives usually suck where quality is concerned or are insanely expensive (for blueray + HDVD I'd imagine it would be upward of 8 grand for a good player).

where quality is concerned HD-DVD and Blueray are basically the same. Both will be 1080p. The only difference is BlueRay's copy protection is more intrusive, and BlueRay movies and players will cost more money.

Personally, I'd rather wait until this whole format war thing is over. The technology is too young and too expensive right now. A combo drive would be great... if I didn't have to sell my organs to get one. Think I'll wait a couple years and see who gets it in the end.
I am hoping BR wins out though.

Whoever can do the cheapest media with burning support wins.
It's going to be that simple.

Yeah. /yawn
Wake me up when we can get a burner for less than $300.

Blue-ray disks have a larger capacity also.

but if you can fit a full length movie in 1080p on both disks, who cares about a larger capacity?

Can include more extras and for gaming, fit more content. If they release recordable versions, you'll be able to fit more data, files, etc. on them. Should be pretty obvious. Higher-capacity is rarely a bad thing.
The HD-DVD consortium has accepted as standard, the past november, a triple layer disc which should still cost less (according to industry sources, I've no means to verify these claims so don't flame me) than a double layered BR while holding 45GB of data.
The only sensible advantage of Bluray over DVD for gaming if you plan to add a lot of pre-rendered movies. A game like Oblivion (100+ hrs of gameplay) fits easily on a DVD-5.

when it comes to price HD-DVD got the upper hand
blu-ray the next betamax

It does seem like that doesn't it. It's a shame they couldn't work things out to avoid it. I guess they didn't learn anything from the betamax situation.

HD-DVD is perfect for what it does, when it comes to storage HVD is around the corner, maybe winter or next fall

BR is inferior to HD-DVD thanks.

Meaningless. Let me know when 50GB movie BR discs hit the market. You're going to see 30GB HD-DVD movies and 25GB BR movies.

There is a difference though. Beta was superior and lost. BR is inferior and will lose.

Everything I've read says they're nearly identical except for the disk capacity size.
Are they not going to have HD-DVD burners or BR burners? If not, I agree. If they will be using them for data storage and similar uses (i.e. using them for more than just movies), I want the format with the largest capacity to win out in the end.

Identical except for disk capacity AND PRICE.
If you have the choice between 2 movies, one blueray, one HD-DVD. Both have the exact same quality (1080p). Both have the exact same special features. The only difference is blueray costs $5 more, and the player costs $200 more. Which one are you gonna buy?
