The X2 needs about 20% more clockspeed to compete e.g. 2GHz Core2Duo vs. X2 2,4GHz.
AMD could compete much better if their dual-core weren't just 2 merged cores but had a unified cache. RAM troughput and latency are superior to the Intel platform, but the caches don't interoperate and it's performance has to be improved a bit.
The main advantage in SuperPi is 128bit SSE together with the cache. AMD can easily add it in the K8L-architecture.
That other Core2Duo Features what Core Duo doesn't have increase the power a percent here and a percent there in real world performance but that isn't really important for AMD to compete.
AMD doesn't need a hole new architecture to answer quickly.
