Do the nforce2 boards automatically unlock any XP proc? People have told me this but I don't know if its true. If so, I can afford to get a cheaper processor rather than a 2600+ or higher.

I think it all depends on what bios revision..You can always flash your bios with the one that unlocks it..Im not sure which revision..I think its 1001c..

iv'e got a 1900+ (Palimino or whatever...) with a Epox-8RDA+ and when i change the multiplier it either does nothing, or sets the FSB to 100Mhz (without changing the multiplier).

Maybe Thoroughbred's work.....

I've got the Abit NF7-S and it unlocks my XP2400 with no problem. I can pick any multiplier I want and without doing anything to the cpu itself.

All Nforce 2 mobos unlock CPU but not every CPU , there was a list on the web which CPU can be unlocket without moding it , yes AthlonXp 2400+ is one of them , i think its only on newer CPUS 2600+ 2700+ 2800+ , 2400+ is lowest supported i think

This is why I came here. I just got a A7N8X and a Athlon XP 2000+ and it seems to be "unlocked". It will let me select the FSB and multiplier. So I guess this is normal.

My 2100+ is a Palimino core (bought it as soon as they were available, around a year ago). I had to manually unlock it for lower multipliers on my MSI KT3 Ultra ARU motherboard, but after lots of instability (RAM issues, mainly, at the higher fsb speeds), and after finding that the performance from the maximum overclock I got with the locked processor and a raised FSB vs the max overclock with lower multipliers and the highest FSB my memory gave me.. basically, locked core was a bit faster in the KT3 with the RAM I had. So I relocked the chip and used it that way.

Now that I've replaced my motherboard, RAM, and video card (Asus A7N8X Deluxe, Corsair 3200 CAS2 LL DIMMS, and R9700 Pro), I had to play with overclocking again. I started out by updating the motherboard to the 1002 final bios, and then messed from there. This bios has allowed me to change the multiplier regardless of the fact that I haven't undone my 'relock' of the processor (nice, btw, since I can now use multipliers both higher and lower than the 13 that my processor defaults to without having to do stuff to the core), and has actually resulted in a gain of around 50MHz in my maximum stable overclock with this Pali, using a 10.5 multiplier and a 182MHz fsb. (Before I was running around 1845 max, using a 138-140Mhz fsb and the default 13x mult, and now I'm at 1814MHz).

So it appears that the nForce2 can unlock many of the current XP's. Be aware that ymmv, depending on the processor. I'm anxiously waiting for AMD to send some 2500+'s to the store that has my preorder.. (they claim it's due in sometime between Wednesday and Friday, but I'm not hopeful given the information in several reviews that stated it would ship toward the end of the quarter :().
