I cant believe we havent heard anything yet... maybe I'll start googling it. Someone had to have seen it if it was at E3. Private or not, they wouldnt have been there if no one was going to see it.
EDIT: Wow that took all of 3 seconds to find :p

EDIT2: Gah... I just read it. It sounds like they are totaly killing this game :(

Nice find but the original poster of the news is a total morron.
The AI is still there, but rather they will use scripted scenes to push the story along. Sounds like an improvement since it sounded like there was no real story before, just wander around and do your thing.
He states that vehicles have been removed but that decision hasn't been finalized. I think we will see vehicles come into play as a need to be thing, not a GTA jump in and drive whereever you want thing.
Sounds like the director is trying to figure out how to streamline it and balance it more. He sounds like he is trying to make it an actual story based game rather then a random large world. The lack of seemless loading is dissappointing but eh.
Well.. screw this.
Looks like DNF will be out before STALKER. :p

So, what has changed in the game? Sharpe was able to enlighten us.
'There isn't that much that's been cut … I've made some minor changes. There were some types of mutants that I pulled out. I took out sleeping and eating - a couple of the minor RPG elements. I also shortened the amount of dialog in the dialog trees - there [was a lot] of back and forth that wasn't needed.'
What was most surprising however was Sharpe revealing that 'I may or may not take out the vehicles - I haven't decided yet'. Vehicles were a big part of the game's original feature-set. If they were to be removed it would pose more than a few design problems, considering the size of the 30-square kilometre area covered in the game.
I hope they dont ruin it. It would have been interesting to have a game that had some realistic "survival" aspects to it. If they get rid of free roaming with vehicles, that will totaly suck. Itd basically be Oblivion with guns if they did all this to it. That isnt necessarily a bad thing, but I was hoping for a survival RPG\shooter. Thats what it was originally supposed to be.
Meh... I dont really care much any more.

I heard about the eating/sleeping removal and the removal of AI outside of the active maps a while ago. I always had the feeling that the project was way too ambitious for them to include all the features they orginally planned. It sucks when things like this happen and IŽll give the game a fair chance but I removed it from my "most wanted" list almost 2 years ago.

Downloading it now. I saw a video a while back, and it just didn't interest me much. But, it wont hurt to see what is coming of it currently.

Why thank you!
Dl'ing now!
EDIT: Downloaded. Must say the aesthetically it looks pretty good. Gameplay-wise I'd have to play it before I can make up my mind. All the cool factors (mostly vehicles) have been partially removed... but this video sure made me want it again.

They canned all the RPG elements in order to make the Q1 2007 launch.

I dont think it ever really was a true "RPG". If it had a skill\experience system, its been gone since it was called STALKER:Oblivion Lost back in 2003. I dont remember ever reading about anything like that.
Other than that, we dont really know much about the gameplay, so its hard to say whats in and what isnt.
The main things I remember reading about recently were the removal of mandatory sleep, and less focus on vehicles.
You still have to eat, and as far as I can tell, it still has the full inventory system, free exploration of the world and different kinds of interactions with NPCs (ie, non violent things, like trading).
I really hope they havent cut too much from it, but at this point, if it has the above features, and the gameplay is good and polished, thats great. Thats what I've been expecting from it since I first heard about it.
