Has anyone else tried the Vista Transformation Pack 4.0?
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/05/20/how-to-make-your-xp-machine-look-like-vista-for-free/
The question I have is, does it truly look like Windows Vista? Because if it does I don't think I like it. It's okay but doesn't seem very professional looking. I might be overly critical but it seems very average looking and doesn't make me want Vista. So I thought I'd ask for some other opinions.

I tried something like this a while back, and it completely hosed my Windows installation. I personally won't touch this stuff again. YMMV.
I wouldn't do it. Most people I know who have used this are pretty un-satisfied.

Meh. Just wait for the real thing. :)
Or at least beta 2.

Just so you guys know, This version works GREAT. If you ever want to uninstall it, that is easy to do as well.

I have two primary partitions and have Windows XP installed on the second partition. I installed the vista transformation pack this morninging on the second copy and everything went fine with the installation but I was disappointed with what it looked like, that's why I wondered if anyone else here had tried it out too.
Like I said. If this is what Vista looks like I think I like XP better. But I'm an old guy and resistant to change :)

Nah, this isn't "exactly" what Vista will look like. It just gives you an idea of what it will look like. I think this mod looks sharp ;)

I agree. For a mod it looks pretty good, but it doesn't have the polished appearance I'd expect from a new OS.

Course Vista also isn't exactly pollished, being in beta and all...
Lacking from any pack would also any features of Vista which would require their newer gfx rendering arch, and Vista specific device drivers. At least I would imagine this to be the case. For instance the 3D effects, that some rumored Vista specs are suggesting a 128 MB gfx card would be recommended for such features to be enabled.
Having some elements of the UI would be one thing. But without the supporting portions of the kernel that it "hooks into" or makes API calls to, one could well be left with some aspects being un-displayable...
Linky doesn't work....
anyone have an alternate download site?
I'm really like this Pack. No problems so far, except my Firefox flipped out. I've since uninstalled FF and strictly using IE 7.

I do like this theme. It has way more overhead associated with it than any other theme I've used, which is ofcourse the downside to it. My machine @ work with intel integrated graphics is kinda sluggish with it.
Vista has some effects you don't see in this. The task switcher (window - tab) is ofcourse not there. The thumbnail preview function for the taskbar isn't there. And the glass effects with the windows really aren't the same.
But yeah it's cool anyway.

Has anyone else got this problem....

Notice the weird tab thing on the top right, looks like a pic should go there?
How can I get rid of it ?
It is supposed to show the pic you chose for your login. Here's the one from the vista 3 pack.

I'm going to try this pack now.

It worked for me. Have you tried selecting a different pic or reselecting the one you want?

Yeah, ive tried a few different ones.... still the same problem.
Completely kills it.
EDIT: Seems to work now, enabled the Logon screen and now its back.
Weird!
What mode did you use to install it? I booted into safe mode and did the automatic install. During the installation, I choose the vista look (instead of longhorn) and the only option I choose not to let it do was change the system font.
Have you tried selecting a different appearance to see if that changes anything? Maybe try selecting one of the windows default ones and see if the pic shows up, then switch back to one of the vista ones.

Weird! This relates to the thread I started under the windows forum about fast user switching.
That isn't what does it. If you have the welcome screen turned on you get your picture. Turn the welcome off - goodbye user picture.
That's what I was going to say next. Hah, just kididng. At least someone knows what is going on. :)

Hell I think I was wrong. I have fast user and welcome screen turned off and my icon shows up. I just installed the transformation pack.
Anyone else have their control panel in the start menu showing up with light blue around it?
*EDIT* n/m that is OK after a reboot.

Stop the icon on the systray from loading that enables the transparency - I dont recall what it's called but the icon is a few boxes on top of another
I had a problem with both of my systems recently. When changing the video driver and getting the default res version of the welcome screen (when no driver is installed) my password box doesn't show up. I basically had to just keep trying various places on the screen until I found a place that allowed me to type it in. Unfortunately, it wasn't directly under the icon like it normally is. I had to go a little further down and to the right. Also, the box still doesn't show up. You just have to type and hit return to see if it works.
What is the shortcut for forcing the old style login? Is it doing control-alt-delete three times in a row from the welcome screen?

My menus and tool bars changed when I installed this - but the when you click start, the rest of the menu is white and shows CodeName Longhorn up the side even though I chose the Vista style. I've reinstalled it twice, same thing. Mine doesnt look anything like OWA's when I click start. On my other machine I'm running Vista Beta 2 so I know what the start menu SHOULD look like...
thoughts?
