Hello everyone, I wanted to submit to your attention Planta, an advanced 3D engine for realtime realistic plant rendering. Planta SDK is the perfect solution for rendering and animating complex scenes made of thousands, even milions, of trees and plants with photorealistic quality in real-time. Please visit


for screenshots, info and demo clips. At the moment, the SDK comes with an OpenGL renderer, even if Planta can be easily integrated with other 3D engines.

I know this is spam, but its kinda interesting. This is the first I've ever heard of any competition for Speedtree.

To be honest, Speedtree looks much better. This reminds me of the "painted" level in Oblivion. It doesnt look realistic at all. Looks kinda neat, but everything looks like its made of cotton.

Is this different than Speedtree though? This is supposedly a rendering engine, where speedtree is just the simulator for the trees and wind and grass, then the graphics engine renders it all with whatever API it uses.

Man, there's so many middleware engines out today. No longer a simple all-in-one solution, now we have graphic engines, physics engines, plant engines, animation engines, material engines...you could spend millions of dollars on a game's development before even hiring any employees.

Still, as CaptNkill said this is pretty much spamming, although I must admit that the "free for non-commercial use" license is intruiging.

I think this looks very good, just look at the details and amount of trees! Look at this screenshot for example, especially on the left side - the details are just amazing! Definately looks promising. ;)

Sorry, I didn't expect it could have been considered spam. As SpeedTree, Planta provides you with a numerical SDK (API independent) to generate and animate the plants. Then you can easily integrate it you whatever engine you want, or use the renderer we provide with the SDK. This means that if you don't like the look it has in our screenshots, you can always use another 3D engine with Planta.

but i do think oblivions trees and various other plants look much more realistic especially the dense forests in the game;)

Yeah, speedtree is more realistic looking. Probably just because of the art they use. The leaves in the Planta pics look more like clusters of green cotton they are so dense.

I have to say Oblivion looks better, but it's good to see technologies like this.
