This is not that big of a deal really.
Meanwhile, CEO Steve Ballmer is opening the door for a minor release delay aimed at facilitating proper coordination with partners.
"What we are discussing ... with hardware partners is when they would really like it -- early January, late January, February—so it depends on when the next rollover, the next turn of the machine cycle will be, and that would be the best time to ship it based on beta feedback," he said. "We think we are on track for shipping early in the year. We’ve talked about the month, but we get a chance to critically assess all of the feedback we’ll get from this beta release then confirm or move [the launch date] a few weeks."
While Ballmer points to business processes and strategy as the source of a possible delay, questions remain about whether or not the new OS can be ready in time, regardless. Those questions will become more clear as Beta 2 of Windows Vista is more thoroughly assessed (while still remembering that it is a beta).

From a sales standpoint, after it's missed the Christmas buying season for 2006, another month almost doesn't matter. December vs. January is the big one, because a launch in Dec. could have meant cashing in on the Christmas buying season. Beyond that...
Besides, if it's being done in cooperation with their partners, as Rip quoted, they likely wouldn't be upset at being listened to :)
