Well the article in the front page: http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/business/5093187.htm , interviews nvidia, and they claim that if ati thinks they will take the performance crown, they must be smoking something:

"Huang is confident that Nvidia will end up back on top. ``Tiger Woods doesn't win every day. We don't deny that ATI has a wonderful product and it took the performance lead from us. But if they think they're going to hold onto it, they're smoking something hallucinogenic.''

Wow, that is pretty bad considering ATI does and will maintain the crown, unless all the early benchmarks of the gffx were wrong, because of drivers or something. You think maybe nvidia has plans of releasing nv35 or nv40 like in shorter then expected time maybe like in 4 to 5 months. But that would hurt gffx sales wouldnt it? But it would put them back on top. Its important to be on the top even if you hurt your own sales. Or is it?

I think you will see the nV35 in the normal time. NV has always had 2 product launchs a year. However with the mid stream NV30 varients show up ??, the lines could blurr. I dont seeing any news about the NV35 happen till the summer. However with ATI R350 right around the corner I find that its the NV30 that wont hold on the preformance crown for long. Having the crown helps to get you (and your product) established as a market leader. Being a market leader helps you to win OEM contracts on your mid to value line. And that is where all the money is at. It will take more than once cycle for ATI to displace nV at the top. The R300 could be the setup for the knock out punch (R350, R400).

could it perhaps be the other way round?

that huang is smoking something and he THINKS that nvidia will retake the crown and all competitors will roll over and beg to be sodomized ?

I dunno :)

Psst, the nVidia executives in charge of NV35 timing didn't realize the NV30 wasn't launched in August ;)
nVidia 2003 lineup is the most aggressive line-up they had in their entire history. 2001 and 2002 lineups sound like defensive strongholds compared to it.

So Uttar,

when do you think they will launch the NV35? Again I am betting summer at earliest. Again launching any earlier will kill the sales of the 3rd party board vendors as its their task to unload the NV30 inventory....

As I said, August is the expected paper launch date.
As for when it's in stores... Hard to say. I'd bet October, but that's just a guess.
So, the NV35 would paper launch just when the R400 is in stores. And it would be in stores after several weeks or a few months.

As you say yourself, a paper launch would hurt NV30 sales. But the R400 also would, so paper launching it once the R400 is in stores seems logical to me.

I'm certain the currently hoped by nVidia release date is August. However, I really don't know for sure when in August and when it'll be in stores.

Uttar

EDIT: After rethinking about it, I'm beggining to hesitate about the August date. It will be around that however, won't be much more or much less ( a few weeks more/less maximum )

If Huang thinks ATi is smoking something than I wonder what he is gonna say when the R400 comes out and annhiliates the NV30 or NV35 along with doubling the R300s performance. Sheesh.

Huang, its ok if you aren't in the lead every quater. But to submit statements like that, it only exemplifies how much trouble Nvidia is in (right now).

...I sure plan to be smoking something when they launch their FX and have an absolute field day of pithy commentary! ;)

This, coming from the same PR machine that proclaimed the NV30 to be the "greatest contribution to 3D graphics," their FSAA to be free in all modes at all resolutions, their intellisample technology offering unparalleled IQ (yeah, right), the competition's 24-bpp color to be sub-par, and their color compression to be "unique."

And now their making statements about the competition not being able to remain competitive at the top end? Yep... I'm buying that PR rubbish.

Newsflash: they have to continue with the fantasy PR claims, since it is the only tool at their disposal to minimize market share erosion. They have to say it, whether it's true or not (or even realistic). Just as they had to lie repeatedly about the GFFX. They simply have no choice at this point.

I Agree that Nvidia is going to regain the performance crown with the Nv35. By a rather impressive margin at that. With the exception of one or two thrid party offerings For ATi who will be fairly close (*cough* ultra high end DDR-II boards*cough*).

But, that is where the celebration ends. Dont kid yourself. this is Idle posturing. What happens in 2004 is anyones guess. But, one thing is for sure... Unless Nv35/36 completely reinvent the Nv30 wheel (which they dont)..... um..... I would not hold my breath on that mantained performance crown thingy..

(Note: the *cough* comment is a true unverified Rumor, but was mentioned to me by someone who would know)

Yeah, too true! I reckon they'll be clearing their desks right now. Moving cardboard boxes out the front door, turning off the lights and locking the doors, a doleful tear rolling down their cheeks.

It's a shame to see NVIDIA go out of business today. Just hope SiS can compete with ATi, otherwise ATi fan-boys won't have an R400 to play with.
