How much memory usage does your windows use when you just start up your pc? I've gone as high as 40% with 1024 mb of ram, which seems rather..large.

You didnt mentioned what OS you used. Yeah 40% of 1GB seems large than with 65% of 512Mb on original Windows XP I used 5 years ago.

Windows 98, 98SE and Me are probably the worst ever at memory management, all these old OSes are memory resource hogs with nothing else added up in task manager, I didnt installed anti-virus software at that time.

RAM Operating System Memory used

128Mb Windows 98 75% - 96Mb
128Mb Windows 98SE 75% - 96Mb
128Mb Windows Me 85% - 108Mb
512Mb Windows Me 85% - 435Mb
512Mb Windows XP 65% - 332Mb
512Mb Windows XP SP1 50% - 256Mb
512Mb Windows XP SP2 35% - 179Mb
4096Mb Windows XP SP2 15% - 614Mb

I now used 4GB with Windows XP SP2, XP SP2 seem have the best memory management I ever seen, it used less than half of your RAM memory. :)
