People who aren't interested (or don't need) a dual core processor but are interested in the new, efficient architecture from Intel might have to wait a little longer.

According to Anandtech, the single core, low cost variant of Conroe won't debut until Q2/07. Until then, PC users looking for a low cost Intel microsoprocessor will be stuck with 65nm Celerons or some flavor of Pentium IV. It seems that Intel still has large stocks of these that need to be cleared.

Why the thumbs down, is 300 bucks for a e6600 2.4ghz 4mb dual core really that expensive? If these dual core conroe's started from 500 bucks then i would understand, but they're much cheaper then that.

...because it will not be released this year.

The e6600 will be released this year, the single core conroes will not be released until '07.

But the e6200 will start at $183!! Great price for a great CPU.

Well, the answer is in my opening sentence in the first post. ;)

If you don't need a lot of horsepower (ie a media center PC or something quiet for web-browsing) there aren't many alternatives on the market right now. I'd rather save 150$ and invest them in a card with ViVo features or maybe in one the incoming HD optical storage media.

Not to mention power dissipation. There are almost no processors on the market which consume less than 30W (aside from Via C* or motherboards supporting the expensive Pentium M) and you've probably better luck recycling an old PIII Tualatin although you're stuck with AGP and SDRAM.

What's the big deal here??

The Allendale E6300 1.86GHZ/1066FSB/2MB is going to be 183US, that is round the old price of where a entry level Pentium 4 is.

In Q4 were going to get the E4200 which is probably going to hit that 150US mark. You can't get much cheaper then that, for a Dual Core.

Why should Intel charge any less I mean they still need to get rid of Cedar Mill/Presler not to mention Prescott/Smithfield as well.

The firesale of those processors for 70-180US is also a good thing as well, never before can you get so much computing power so cheaply.

Pentium D 945 for 163US which is basically the same performance as the S939 Athlon 64x2 3800+, flat out amazing!!!
