MSI K9N SLI Platinum AMD SktAM2 nF570 board, 2x PCI-E x16, 3x PCI, DDR2, 6x SATA, Firewire, 2x Gigabit, audio w/SPDIF

Leadtek 7950GX2 1Gb DDR3 PCI-E x16 dual-GPU video card, 2x DVI

AMD Athlon64 X2 4200+ 64-Bit CPU, Dual-Core 2x 512K Socket939 w/AMD fan-heatsink

OCZ 2048Mb Enhanced Latency PC-3200 XTC, 2x 1024mb 184-pin DDR sticks, 2-3-2-5 with heatspreader

300Gb Seagate 7200.9 7200rpm SATA-II hard disk, 16mb cache, NCQ

I am going for a upgrade that hopefully might last me awhile much like how the 6800GT has helped me for a very long time. Ive had 6800GT till now and i do ok with it..but after seeing some of the new games comming out of e3..i feel its time for another upgrade.

The 7950GX2 is faily new, but it does offer a good option and the obvious future quad sli might be a very handy future upgrade.

In terms of Chip/Memory i am not sure along with motherboard..is there any other good motherboard brands i should look for..what brands to avoid? I have been using Gigabyte for awhile and i cant really say i can complain about it.

Is the X2 going overboard? is it really worth it (The CPU)

Cheers in advance

i think you would need a little fast cpu if anything...

Your 6800GTs in SLi may be as much as your monitor will handle. There is no need to upgrade the video cards if the monitor will not handle the higher res. If you are not running 1200X1600 or higher res or a very large (30") monitor, the faster video cards won't help. If you want to upgrade look at upgrading both.

I have the Opty 165 and I was unimpressed with it until I OC'd it to over 2.2 GHz. Most software still doesn't take advantage of the dual core. Maybe in a future OS, it will be more of an advantage. An Opty 175 is slightly better than an Opty 148, and all the Optys are better than their counterpart in either Athlon 64, FX or X2 series. If the price is close take the Opteron. The dual core is a little murkier, if an Opty 150 is the same price as a Opty 165, I think I take the Opty 150.

Hope this helps.

my bad, its meant to be the asus sli mobo. Lol thx for picking it up ><

The prices for the CPU seem to go up alot as the models change from the 4400 onwards..just wondering if its worth the extra cash for a few % inc in perfm. I plan to play my games on 1280x1024, and even right now 6800GT on 1024 res isent handling some of the more resent games very well..even Q4 has problems with AA @ that res..no problem in doom 3 tho..FEAR gives me a bit of a problem but can handle 2xAA and i finished the game...but i wanna enjoy the game, and i still havent tried oblivion out...i dont wanna cut corners and at the same time also pay too much for something that might end up helping me ><

There's no way you can hold off a month or 2 for Conroe? Or are you set on X2?

you're worried about a couple hundred more for a cpu when you listed dual 7950s?

maybe i misunderstood about dual 7950s. the drivers can't do quad sli yet anyway. i'd go with dual 7900gt's and get the 4400. but it's true that almost no games take advantage of dual cores yet. unless you want bragging rights with 3dmark06.

Not for bragging rights ><. Just for smooth gameplay so i can enjoy the game while having good image quality. I am thinking of holding out for DX10/Vista
