View Full Version : 7800 GS on AGP 4X - Will it limit the card's true potential?

I have an older system, and $300. I don't want to buy a new computer 'till next year. Would it be worth it to buy a 7800 GS even though my mobo only has a AGP 4X slot? I read somewhere that most cards don't really need more bandwidth than 4X can do (1.1gps)... Also, the processor is an Athlon 2600+. Will this limit the card at all, besides the AGP 4X? Thanks... I've been wondering this for a while. I went from a Geforce MX 4000, to a 6200 and I didn't see any performance increase in CS: Source... I did see improvments in other games though. Why might this be? Sorry, I have a lot of questions. Thanks!

The 7800 GS will spank the 6200 in raw performance, in shader heavy games..

Your MX4000 ran CS:S in dx7-mode, your 6200 probably runs CS:S in dx9 which looks a lot better but is more demanding for the gfx-card. So that had nothing do with AGPx4 and CPU bottlenecking.

AGPx4 will limit a 7800GS a bit. I dont know how much because the last comparative test between 4x and 8x I read was with a slow 9800pro. The CPU will definatly bottleneck a 7800GS. So maybe its wiser to upgrade to a little slower card like 6600gt, 6800xt, x800gto.
