Hey. I recently discovered that my GeForce 5900 Ultra card was dying(it gets VERY HOT, then the program or OS crashes). So, I have been looking around for some new cards. I have a budget of $200 or less and i have an AGP 4x slot. I am quite impressed with the XFX Geforce 6800. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814150157) For $150, it seems like the best deal. Does anyone have imput on some good cards that are AGP 4x comp and has at least 256meg of VRAM?

Thanks,

Athena

P.S Sorry for cross posting in the Linux forum, I just realized that I posted in the wrong forum.

The 6800 is a great card.
If I were u I would find a used GT or ultra.
The GT and ultra have more pipelines.

My recommendations:

The 6800GS

The 6800GT

or

The 6800Ultra.

My number one recommendation:

The 6800GS... reason being with RivaTuner you can unlock all the "masked units" and the card instantly performs equivalently to a 6800GT. With a 50Mhz oc on the core, and 100MHz oc on the ram you would then have a 6800 Ultra.

All for only around $175 last time I checked, which was a while ago.

Unfortunately, this is the best Newegg carries:

I checked out that card already. The thing is, the ASUS only has 3 year warrenty. and if compared to the XFX 6800, the xfx runs faster and more efficiently, and has lifetime warrenty.

Thanx for looking though!!! :D

Thanx guys. I have settled with the XFX 6800XT. really nice card. looks great. black with a green fan. goes without saying that it runs better than the old 5900 ultra... no problems. if anyone else is looking for a good AGP card, this is a good one.

Nice purchase but you'll be kicking yourself when those 7600GS/GT AGP cards comes out next month.

Out of the box the XT is not impressive, but if you're lucky you can softmod your card to get a 6800GT chip. Won't perform on par with one, but you can get sorta close with some overclocking thrown in.

Did you already buy? the XT only has 8 pipes. The GS has 12 and the GT has 16. If you have not already bought it and are ok w/ a 8 pipe card get the 6600 GT and not the 6800XT. The increased base clock of the 6600 GT will make it a much better card for gaming then the 6800XT.

But if you have already bought it then just enjoy what you have. :D

What is your CPU and let us know what kind of performance you see on the card over you old 5900. I am also looking to get an AGP card for a old P4 1.8 Ghz I was given to use as a back up PC.

PS I love your name!!!! ;)

yes. i had already known the 7600 was coming out, but im not gonna be around in a month, and i know my parents arnt gonna get a graphics card while im not here...they dont understand computers...so, for the price im happy. and i probably wouldnt have gotten any new graphics card, if the 5900 ultra hadnt of died. and i have a 1.7 Ghz Pentium 4. the quality is better, i can actually put the settings on high for quake 4!!! with the 5900 ultra, it could barely do medium.
