View Full Version : Jump from X800 Pro -> BFG 7800GS OC?
I was wondering how big of a performance difference I'll see between these cards. The video card on one of my computers (Radeon 9700) is, obviously, a few years old now, and it's starting to act a little off, so I figured I could upgrade the card in my primary system and upgrade my other computer at the same time (basically two-for-one deal). I was just wondering how big of a boost I should notice. The only reviews I can find for comparison benchmarks are between the 7800GS and the X800 XT PE or whatever.
Expect a decent performance increase , but most importantly new features! (i.e SM3.0/HDR)

The 7800GS is somewhat faster than an X850XT depending on the game. That would certainly outpace an X800 Pro by a significant margin. You would also get the newest features like SM 3.0 and HDR. I would not buy a 7800GS for an AGP system unless I wanted to keep using it at least until Vista comes out next year. The 7800GS is still in the $300-$350 range. Unless you are really set against upgrading for several months, I wouldn't recommend it. You can get a 7900GT which is a much faster card for the same price. You would also have to get a new mobo and probably a new CPU for it as well.

the exact reason i went with my 7800GS... stretch my agp system out as long as possible while saving for my holy crap uber rig when vista comes out
and you can get them cheaper than $300 if you catch it while there is a good rebate offer (which expired the day before i bought mine causing me to pay $20 more)
I got and exellent increase going from a BFG 6800GToc(409 MHz / 1104 MHz) to the Gainward 7800GS+(490 MHz / 1360 MHz)
For example my 3dmark2005 went from 5218 to 8138.
e.g of fram rate in
Return To Proxycon 22.9 to 33.6
Firefly Forest it went from 14.8 to 25.6
CTsource @ 1600x1200 4xFSAA 8xas on HDR levels stays around 60-70 FPS
The 7800GS is still in the $300-$350 range.
Well, I went for it and I got mine for $230. :)
Yes, I don't plan to do a complete overhaul on my system until next year, because it really doesn't need it (see signature). Like I said, the main reason I'm doing this is because the video card on my other computer is starting to bug out, and I figured I could give both of them a decent boost for not much money.

Yes if you have a X800pro then you should see a nice increase going to a 7800GS.plus you will have the new feature ,such as P.S 3 and V.S.3 and HDR.
