View Full Version : GTA4 will use Table Tennis engine
When TT was announced I wondered what was Rockstar thinking. Now I understand. They were probing the capabilities of next gen hardware and, in the mean time, making some cash. :p

I wonder if GTA4 will have a table tennis minigame?

I can't see how a table tennis game can translate to a GTA game with car physics, world population, an AI system, etc. I suppose you can take some of the basic technologies used in the Table Tennis game.
(...)their recently released Table Tennis game is powered by a new game engine called RAGE (the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine) and according to some Rockstar reps in a recent interview on MTV this is also the game engine that will power future Rockstar games, including the much anticipated GTA IV for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The animations and clothes physics seem to hint at what we might see in GTA4. At the same time this isn't really surprising, I didn't expect Rockstar to build an engine for a Table Tennis game with complex shaders and stuff and then put barely any content in it.

At least they finally changed the engine.
As far as I can tell, its basically been the same engine since the first GTA, they just changed the viewing angle. Everything still vanishes when it gets a certain distance away, police still spawn just outside a certain radius around you, the police road blocks pop up exactly the same way that they did in gta 2...
Hopefully the next GTA is totaly different than the last 3. I think its a cool concept but the quirks of the games and the engines always made the games extremely irritating to play, not to mention extremely ugly to look at (especially for the performance). GTA 2 was my favorite one by far. It didnt have the trash talking ghetto attitude that everyone seems to love, but it was fun to play without making me want to stab someone in real life (ie, the game developers :p).
Does Table Tennis have hot coffee? :p

I'm pretty sure they had to since EA owns Renderware now.
It is not a bad engine, but it will remain to be seen how it scales.
In table tennis, it is a very focused scenario, much like fight night.
Would love to see it with all kinds of things going on at the same time in large scale.
