well i finally built my first pc... i have everything except for an OS... i've only used windows before.... xp pro is like $120+ is it worth it? or is there a better os for less? or any links to a good deal on xp pro?

Check NewEgg constantly because they always run specials on OS software. Also, check out Media Center 2005 edition. It's supposed to be XP Pro with the media center, not to mention it's cheaper than Pro.

How did I know that's what you were going to say? :D

As for the question, I'd say Windows is probably your best bet. Especially if you plan on gaming on it...Do you need XP Pro? Or will Home do just fine? Because Home edition is a bit cheaper...

i have Pro on all my comps except for my gaming rig, i have home. I see basically no difference lol

I'd get Meida Center 2005 as well, since it contains every feature of xp pro and you get some extra neet stuff, for a lower price than xp pro. :) Media Center would also be a wise choice if you plan on getting an xbox360 someday.

aight so i think i'll start lookin for media edition... ne1 got a link for a cheap one? and does it matter if its oem or retail?? oo and i have an athlon 64 3200+ cpu... should i get xp 64 edition or whatever?

Go for the OEM version if you can, it's a bit cheaper for exactly the same thing. Only thing is I don't think you will be able to get the OEM version unless you buy another piece of hardware with it. And there isn't a 64bit version of media edition...so don't worry about that...

Not sure about where you live, but the Academic Version of Pro is the cheapest. In Australia its about $80-120AUD. Cheaper than the OEM and Home versions. You can pick it even if you are not a student, aslong as you promise not to use it for any business purposes.

If you don't mind playing games, try Open Qnx.

It's a fully featured real time os with posix compliance and graphic interface. It's also one of the smallest available (there is still a floppy distro), most stable (it has been employed succesfully in "mission critical" environments) and it can be used on a wide variety of computers including the grandma's 486 with 8MB of RAM
