Are Xbox Live 360 accounts different from the original Live?

I was wondering if Xbox Live is "backwards compatible" from the 360 to the Xbox 1. Can I import my 360 GamerTag to my original system? I'd like to hook up my original system to my router and download DDR packs for it. If I can sign up with my 360 account, that would be great. If not, no big deal.
