This would be sweet, that means the Wii would have to drop it's price as well.

Just because they are designing the hardware to cut costs doesn't mean a pricecut is in the works... The PS2 was designed to cut cost after its 6th revision (early 2005 release I think) and they didn't lower its price till recently.
I dout MS would cut the price anyway, they already have a $100 lead on the PS3 and the Wii honestly isn't a big threat to either console... MS loses enough per console, theres no way they could redesign to console to shave off $100 in such a short amount of time and then sell it for cheaper (losing the benefit of cutting its manufacturing cost).
If they do find a way to cut the manufacturing cost of the units, the consumers wont be seeing a benefit from it this year... I say probably next year if anything.
I'm with |MaguS| on this one. No way they are cutting cost. And if, if they do, not by anything significant. Maybe by $20-50 just to steal a little of the PS3s thunder. But I'd be shocked and amazed if they lopped off $100 only a year after release. That's just huge, and haven't price drops historically been more incremental?
I would actually not object such a thing. Sony would have to react...

Nope, Sony is too full of themselves to care about the other consoles prices...

QFT!
As I said in the other thread, in Europe the Xbox 360 is being already repositioned at 280/350€ and price for the peripherals is being dropped too.
But hoping for a 100$/€ price cut seems a bit eccessvie. Dropping the price of 50 bucks now (summer is slow) and 50 in time for the next E3 would be a better strategy in light of the huge costs already sustained by Microsoft to enter in the console arena.
These price cuts won't affect PS3 sales. People willing to fork out 500-600$ for it are certainly not "distracted" by any price cut Microsoft might pull out. Yet Microsoft has to sell as many consoles as possible while it's still alone on the market and also this winter to keep the installed base growing at a steady rate.
I think that Microsoft is starting to consider the Wii a threat too, because it might undercut the marketshare for the core. If microsoft can keep up the sales this winter, then they can start 2007 from a strong position, even more because by that time they should be able to cut the production costs considerably and to market their console aggresively.

How was that Anti-Sony? Its just the truth, Sony believes that they can sell the console at a premium price (which they will) so why would they care if the Xbox 360 is even cheaper. They didn't lower the PS2's price when the Dreamcast dropped to $99 and lower.
We all know Sony has an Ego, no one could deny that... well maybe NV40 (anyone seen him around lately?).

THat will be like comparing a BMW 6 series with a the best daihatsu model and claiming the latest one is much better because is cheapier. lol! when the first one have a superior engine ,cutting edge technology and a more features . you pay for what you get.
A more closer comparison , is the PS3 core @ CEll ,20gb Harddisk and High definition player -BLURAY with free online gameplay vs.. the Xbox360 premiun package @ Xeno ,20GB hardisk with a very cheap DVD player and wihout free online gameplay.
when you do a more closer comparison its a $100 price diference. but if you want apples vs apples ,then you need to drop another ~($200) to the Xbox360 premium ($399) external HD-DVD player and compare it againts the core PS3 package $499. In the end you will end paying a lot more with the "better priced" Microsoft console. the low price of Xbox360 core package is just for marketing purposes because you will need to buy a HArdisk sooner or later to play your better games.

If you are going to use a car analogy, at least use it properly. I don't see how Blu-Ray, disk size, and online features equate with the engine in a car. Unless you are trying to imply that the Cell is better, which is dumb since the PS3 hasn't been released yet.

The Xbox360 core model is widely considered as "retarded" though. The low-end PS3 has all the features of the "premium" Xbox360, and adds in some new ones.
I agree with Nv40, there's no way you can compare a "core" Xbox360 with the low-end PS3 model.

Well said but on the other hand, how is it dumb? Take a look around the forum and you'll see many "experts" around here who can all but guarantee that the Cell is ****, the PS3 has overheating problems, the RSX is so poor they considered renaming it to RSS(hit), there's probably a frantic redesign of the whole thing behind the scenes, Blu-Ray technology is almost certainly going to fail, half the fanbase has switched to the X360 already, while the release is definately going to be delayed to 2008 at which time it will bomb completely anyway. The fact that it's not out yet hasn't prevented them from coming to conclusions. Similarly nobody around here has even touched a ****ing Wii but of course that's only a minor issue for a console that has all but reinveted gaming already.
Now back to the point, i recall a recent interview from an MS executive (probably Moore) who made a comment about the PS3 price and said that there really is no need for them to do a price drop for the Xbox due to the PS3's high price. Of course you can never know, he could be lying so as to pleasently surprise potential 360 buyers come November.

Are you like the polar opposite of Nv40 when it comes to the PS3?
It was plain to see that NAZCA was being sarcastic in his reply. We already have the Bizarro version of NV40. His name is EvilChris!!! ;)

I think this is something MS wanted to announce at E3 but pulled back from it after Sony's price announcement.
The Xbox360 core model is widely considered as "retarded" though. The low-end PS3 has all the features of the "premium" Xbox360, and adds in some new ones. I agree with Nv40, there's no way you can compare a "core" Xbox360 with the low-end PS3 model.
But why? The xbox 360 does not need and HD, just like the PS3 doesn't need an HDMI connection or external memory slots. There's a foundamental difference though. You can turn an Xbox "core" into a "premium" by adding accessories later while you can't stick an HDMI connection to the basic PS3.
"Retard pack" comes from the better price/value ratio of the 400$ not certainly because you purchase a machine incapable of doing something the other does. With the core you can even use Live and download an arcade game (they all fit into memory units) or patches (all the Xbox patches so far have been quite small, a few megs at worst).

I donīt think there will be a $100 price drop, at least not in Europe, since we already got a $50 price drop. There might be another $50 price drop in Europe between November and Spring/Summer next year just like msxyz said.
Either way, it kind of sucks because I was so close of FINALLY buying a box. :o

Nope, some things are so far fetched they're obvious. Heh, truth be told though, i don't particularly like using emoticons but you know, looking at your avatar, for a second i was thinking of simply replying with a photo of Spidey with a WTF baloon thrown in. Just look at his expression :D :D

msxyz, what I'm saying is that feature-for-feature, the Xbox360 'Premium' system is equivalent to the PS3 'value' system (with a few extras added in, like the Blu-ray player).
Therefore, it's fair to compare those two systems, rather than compare a feature-rich platform (the PS3) to the feature devoid one (Xbox360 'core').
I disagree, the "retard pack" comes from all the limitations the core model comes with. The Xbox360 core pack cannot do the same things the Xbox360 premium pack can. I know, I own a core system. :(
Out of the box you
(1) Can't play on Xbox Live (Memory card or HD required)
(2) Can't run in HD (composite cables are included, awful quality even in SD)
(3) Can't use voice chat (no headset)
(4) Can't run Backwards compatable games (Memory card or HD required)
(5) Can't store music/videos/game demos (No harddrive)
(6) Can't patch games either (requires memory card or harddrive).
and of coure, no wireless controller, remote, shiny disk drive etc. Not to mention some games (like Oblivion, and possible future titles) are going to run much slower on the core system, due to the lack of a harddrive.
Sure, you spend an extra $200-$300 adding in stuff (as I did), but at that's not the issue here. If you are going to do a PS3 vs Xbox360 price comparison, it's best just to do it on an even footing, the PS3 'value' system vs the Xbox360 premium.
