Hi,

The fan on my old FX 5900 Ultra AGP is getting noisier with each passing day, so I'm looking to replace it.

Any recommendations on a quiet 256MB AGP card that's at least equivalent in performance and sub-$200?

Every decent passive cooling card I found was PCI-E...

Or heck - should I just replace the fan?

Thanks, and great forum!

Mike B

If you can wait a little longer, go with the 7600GS. If you can't, then I would say ATI x1600

it isnt very hard to beat the FX series in performance, the 7600GT will run circles around it and will be avalible on agp in a litte while, you might also want to look at the 850XT (ive seen them as low as 130$ on newegg).

@stoneguy, the x1600 is a joke, its slower than the 6600GT :-p

really? While honestly I havn't seen the benchmarks on it, my friend has one and said he was very happy with it. He was upgrading from a 5900 so that's what made me think of it.

Well, that depends on what kind of games he is running. The FX series in general sucked and shader intensive games- they would be significantly slower than even the 6600GT. But, as soon as you play games that utilize OpenGL or DX without being shader intensive, the cards scream. Heck, my aging 5950U still kicks can in any current OpenGL title. But, compare its DX performance to that of a 6600GT, 7600 series, or even X1600 series and it quickly lags.

As for your card, I'd do one of two things:

One; you could put an NV Silencer on it- I've got one on my 5950U and it has made a world of difference (my 5950U was ASUS Rev. 3 which was single slot cooling. Not the best idea for the 5950U). The card should still offer enough performance to last untill you can afford to do a major upgrade.

Option two; get either the 7600GT when it comes out on AGP or spend some more $$$ and go with the 7800GS. Those are the only two cards I'd currently recommend (well, I guess you could the the 7600GS in the mix as well).

Only thing about the 7800GS, is that you had better have a faster processor or the CPU quickly becomes a bottleneck.

The 7800GS would be your best choice, but you would need to have at least an AMD 1.8GHz or P4 2.8GHz to make it worthwhile.

My gf just got the XFX 6800 XT which runs great. She can run Quake 4 at high settings 2x aa and 1024x768 res with it being pretty smooth.

If you decide to go with the 7600GT AGP when it comes out, which is what I suggest you do, get an aftermarket cooler as the stock fan is pretty loud.

Thanks, folks. Good advice!

For now, I bought a Zalman VF700, which I'll be installing later today. Hopefully it will tide me over until I upgrade to the newer AGP cards (or a new box altogether).

FYI, the only game I really play is WoW. The 5900U has handled it very well for the last 18 months.

Thanks again,
