View Full Version : noisy fan on FX 5200 based card?

This is an EVGA e-GeForce FX 5200 card. The fan is horribly noisy, overshadowing case fans and CPU fan (on and Athlon-64) Based on my searching of the forum, there is no fan speed control for these. (Running 32 bit Linux, if it matters.)

Is there anything I can do?

Would it be foolish to disable the fan?

thanks,
hank

download nvclock, theres a fan controller on there

Hi and thanks.

I installed the one with my distro and all I can get it to do is segfault. I removed it and downloaded the source and built it. Same result.

Build is configured for:
NVClock build summary:
----------------------
- Commandline version enabled
- NV-CONROL support disabled
- GTK2 GUI disabled
- QT GUI disabled

and running:
(gdb) run -i
Starting program: /usr/local/bin/nvclock -i

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0xb7efdd18 in strcmp () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6
(gdb) where
#0 0xb7efdd18 in strcmp () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

#2 0x0804c773 in parse_config ()
#3 0x0804c25d in open_config ()
#4 0x080522f7 in init_nvclock ()
#5 0x08049656 in main ()
(gdb)

So it's looking for a config file or there's something wrong with the way I'm invoking it. Got any insight?

thanks,
hank

I downloaded and built from the CVS and that solved the segfault. Now I get:
hbarta@toonsinator:~/nvclock-cvs/nvclock$ nvclock -F 80
Error: Your adjustment of the fanspeed isn't supported on your type of videocard!
hbarta@toonsinator:~/nvclock-cvs/nvclock$

So I guess the fan is not adjustable. :(

I also built nvclock_gtk which puts up a nice dislay with no mention of the fan speed. I wonder if I can underclock and safely kill the fan.

thanks,
hank
