I rent it today and here is a small review after playing it for 2 hours.

Visuals and Performance - Similar like FO1, but with higher res textures, higher polycount, motion blur and HDR post processing effect with light rays and lens flare effects. AA works nicely with that type of HDR on my 6-series card. I played it maxed out at 1280x960/16AF-HQ/2AA and the average framerate was in the 40s. FO1 was twice as fast at these settings though.

Tracks - Theses are the basic types of tracks: Countryside, urban/city, racetracks (incl. ovals, 8-tracks), destruction derby tracks and stunt tracks. All tracks have hidden short cuts and tons of destructive enviroments and I saw at least 20 different tracks.

Cars - There are 4 basic types of cars, old junk cars mainly used for off-road and destruction derbies, stock-cars used on ovals, street/race cars and jet-powered stunt cars. All cars are upgradable but mainly performance wise, visually I was only able to pick a different paintjob. I only assume that since I basically only scratched the surface of the content (car and track wise) by playing it for two hours. There are about 30 - 40 cars in total, nicely modelled and well textured, less polys than the cars in NFSMW but thats the price of the damange system which seems to be slightly improved over FO1.

Handling - The biggest annoyance at this point is the hidden traction control/speed limit in corners. I know its an arcarde racer but I was highly annoyed to see that I was WOT all the time in the corners and just couldnīt get faster and had to wait for a straight until I noticed how the TC/speed limit disabled. This TC was still present in a slightly reduced form with maxed out engine upgrades. I would have prefered a diffculty setting (arcade/sim) instead of this type of approach. Other than that, the handling is nice, somewhat understeery in slower corners, oversteery in faster ones, very controllable and the "feedback" between surface and the vehicle is decent for an arcarde racer. I did have a lot of fun after getting used to the handling and accepting the drawbacks, FO1 felt a little better though, but thats just my personal opinon.

Physics/Damage model - Similar to slightly improved over FO1

Gameplay - This one is a lot of fun. For people that liked FO1, its has nicely envolved and definitly worth to carry the title "Flat Out". It comes with SP (career mode, single races) and MP. I didnīt try out the MP though.

Music and Sounds - Music is mainly rock and metal tunes incl. bigger names like Megadeth but quite a few unknown (to me) artists. It fits nicely to the gameplay and never annoyed me. Sound effects are at a good standard but nothing overly special or mind blowing.

Rating overall - 8.1 - 8.5

The game has Starforce 4.0, and while I didnīt have any problems with it, your mileage might vary. I personally donīt feel like buying it because of this little fact until it drops under $25.

I dunno where you can get it now... I did play it at E3 and I liked it, it seemed very similar to Flatout1

My brother bought the original from game.co.uk.

You can get Flatout 2 right here:

Unless things have changed, they will ship over seas :)

After playing it for a few more hours I have to say that my review was a little too critical because this game is mad fun and very addictive! The AI is very challanging, takes use of shortcuts, and nitros, and a rubberband AI cheat seems not to exist. Like I said there are around 40+ cars and I did count 57 tracks, so there is a lot of content.

agentkay: The cars can be wrecked even more this time round cant they!?

The wheels come off this time i know as ive seen it in pics. so if you trash the cars too much they may become undrivable.

Yes that is true. I have destroyed a few cars during the track races and you actually get extra money if you do so but the AI seems to try to win the races instead of pushing you off the road into trees. The destruction derby mode is the only mode where the AI actively tries to destroy you.

Am i missing something here?

Just a bit, lol. here is a recent news quote from tweakguides that wil give you a clue as to the nature of Starforces problems:

In what I think is an amusing turn of events, StarForce - makers of system-intrusive and potentially system damaging copy protection software - have released a StarForce Vista Driver, so that Windows Vista Beta users can play StarForce-protected games. My recommendation is that Vista users do not install these drivers and if necessary go without playing StarForce-protected games. StarForce's days are numbered as major developers like Ubisoft have dropped their use of it, and I can only hope that by the time the final retail version of Vista is released, StarForce will be nothing but a bad memory.

Do a google search on SF if you want more, the list of problems and forum posts is endless.

Maybe I should import this, I never played the original but this one looks alot like Burnout which I loved. How much is Ģ17.99 in dollars?

BTW, I still love Starforce! Never had a problem with it and I currently have 3 titles with it installed.

Wow those screenshots are AMAZING. Much better looking than most of the official ones around the internet. The textures and the use of HDR really bring it to life.

Thanks for the shots

As to starforce... meh... I hate starforce too, but I dont think I hate it enough to willingly miss out on a great game. I'll probably just use something to crack it after I get the game anyway. It isnt really that hard.

Nice review agentkay. Thanks for the screenshots as well.

It sounds like a fun game but with starforce 4, I'll pass for now. Basically, wait and see if it gets released on a download service like direct2drive, so I don't have to deal with the CD/DVD.

$33,27 US Dollars. I never played Burnout but destruction is a strong aspect when it comes to gameplay in FO2. For instance your Nitro boost increases when you crash an opponent (there are 5 crash "levels"), and you need as much boost as possible because the AI is fast. You get money for crashes as well so its definitly important. Jumps are important as well because every time your car is in the air your Nitro increases as well. The Nitro boost effect is combination of nice exhaust flame effects, an increased motion blur and FOV increases by 20-30 degrees or so. Itīs a nice effect and the first few times I did slide back on my chair a little bit.
