I am considering putting the new Windows Vista Beta 2 on one or more of my machines at home. Any experiences or tips for gaming? Does the x64 version work better in games than the x32 version (for an Athlon 64 3700+)? Any special driver issues to consider?

all games run slower on vista right now, and that probably won't change in the final, there actually was a review comparing xp 32bit, xp64, vista 32bit, vista 64bit in gaming.

bad idea to use Vista as a primary machine until its final.

Build 5456 is much faster than 5384 was. But I still wouldn't attempt to play a game on it though.. Run a dual boot, that way you can still test out Vista if you want.

plus there still is no SLI support

Unless nVidia release a better driver than 88.61 which has a terrible CP with basically no working options then gaming on Vista is no-go atm. Simple things such as AA/AF cant even be changed. Also, I wont play any game without Digital Vibrance (<3 nvidia) as things look bland as hell on my screen unless I use that - thats one of the reasons I switched to nVidia ;) . 88.61 has no sign of any colour options.I remember I used to game heaps back when I had Longhorn builds in 4xxx, now Vista is just way too different to XP to use XP drivers. Using XP drivers on Beta 2 or 5456 disables glass, and also causes a BSOD whenever a D3D app is run with file nv4_mini.sys.

C'mon nVidia and Creative, release good drivers :( Hopefully by RC1 both will release decent drivers :)

not sure how anyone can really take vista beta and compare it with something like xp..drivers out are not even fully compatible..its just there to show some form of 3d effect..
Untill Vista is fully released and drivers/hardware full out can we really test the XP vs Vista.

Nothing really to test in games with vista beta right now..some work..some dont..some half work..wouldn't really bother with it.. just get vista transform pack and wait for official vista ><

If you wanna test vista out just get another cheap hdd with 20GB. I installed it on one of my old 100GB hdds to check out vista, looks nice.

Just installed Vista Beta 2 on my test machine. I'm actually seeing pretty similiar gameplay as XP-64 was giving for DDO. The loading for every zone is actually much faster. 3d fps is about the same. NV's year-old vista sound driver that comes in their month-old vista b2 package is causing the most problems (sound just stops until reboot, machine BSOD's if you have more than one app using sound).

Dare I try sticking in the X-Fi though?

Creative has some beta drivers (at least for my SB Audigy 2 ZS Plat) but they aren't very good. For now it's going to remain a toy and I'll continue to dual-boot XP.

last i saw it was about a 50% performance drop so i would advise against it

A new build came out today according to arstechnica. I logged into the MSDN site and couldn't find it though.

It's build 5472.

Does the BETA have DX10 on it?

dxdiag.exe reports DirectX 10 but that probably just bits and pieces of it in beta form.

Does the BETA have DX10 on it?

With no current dx10 hardware or software out, would it really matter if it did?

Anyone here get this latest build? It's not available to MSDN subscribers. :(
