After having strictly Nvidia products since TNT2 Ultra I bought a 9700pro. I absolutly love it. There are little things I don't like about it but on the whole it is as big if not bigger jump than the jump from my Voodoo to my TNT2 Ultra.

All smiles here. :D

BTW I had not a hint of problems in my installation since I did wait all these months for the drivers to mature and the price to drop. $290 was my price at a local puter store. This does not mean I am a ATI fan and leaving Nvidia for good. It simply means my decision on buying a video card is based on price and performance and this time it was ATI.

Cheers peeps :afro:

I found the 4xAA 8xAF to be the sweet spot for me on performance visuals when I was playing around with a 9500 Pro, enjoy the hell out of the tasty visuals!

What games have ya tried? What do you bench now? DETAILS man, I need DETAILS! :D

Ok, Just a little cuz I am at work. I will post more later this evening.

I play mainly BF1942

Puter specs:
XP1700
MSI 266a
9700pro
IBM75GXP (and yes it has never given me a problem)
512 2100 Ram

BF in multiplay games @ 1024x 7** (forget the last part) :o
4xaa 8xani all detail maxed cept shadows @ and average of 85-95fps. With a lot of action on maps like Market Garden the FPS can drop to 25-35fps but I am a good sniper and pilot and as you know the demand on fps isnt as high in those positions so it is a lot smother play. I did have a crappy first game because I was too busy goking at al the eye candy and detail that I was killed every 5 seconds.

Unreal 2 is a different story. I get low frame rates right now The game is new to me and have not found the good settings yes but even at low frame rates the game is single player so it isnt that big of a deal to me.

My performance in

I am more than pleased. I did not do a fresh install. I just unistalled Nvidia Dets, cleaned the registry and installed cat3.0and control panel. The only draw back from the 9700pro as compared to my ti4600 is the lack of DV. ATI needs this to make the games come to life a little more but this is minor to me.

I feel the same way. DV gives my games a warmer, richer look. Colors from the ATI card seem a bit flat in comparison.

Ya, The colors are exactly the same as 3DFX's colors. Not that it is bad but just flat as you said. I will try to adjust the hues and see if I can create a richer environment. If I can I'll post the settings if you are interested. I think since I have had both companies cards I can be a good judge of how it should look to me.

*marches off to his mission*

Please do. To me, there's almost a world of difference in color richness in moving back and forth between my laptop and desktop. If I can get something remotely close on my desktop to what I have now on my laptop I'll be a happy camper.

Wow, that totally sucks. At least in terms of sales tax I never usually have to pay more than 8%. But US $64 on a ~US$350 (assuming 1 pound = $1.60) video card is really steep.

Welcome to ATi.

I love my R9700PRO, and my new Mobility Radeon 9000 in my laptop I got yesterday.

Got to love AlienWare too!

It seems Unreal 2 isn't finished just yet so changeing quality from High to low doesn't change anything game runs all the time in high detail , only thing you can adjust it resolution and Shadows

Some things i noticed high level shadows eat alot of resources/FPS

Changeing resolution from 800x600 to 1600x1200 does not affect FPS on Radeon9700Pro , seems to be limited on CPU power i think

Adding AA 2x or 4x bearly affects FPS also weird  but its a good thing , this shows once again all Unreal games are CPU limited bah.. :(

digital vibrance doesn't have anything to do with gamma, at least i dont think it does. Nvidia products just have a warmer look to them. ATI products and 3DFX products have better IQ but always look flat to me. I might be wrong but that is what I see. Now when I say it looks flat that does not mean it looks bad because it doesn't. It just looks...."flat".

I guess I could compare it to Sony receivers and Denon receivers.
Sony's are dull and not that interesting while Denons are warm and rich sounding. Both are good companies but one just has the sound I like better for middle of the road receivers.

isn't digital vibrance all brightness controls?

Don't forget about the weird lines evident in Voodoo through Voodoo3 cards... :p

the Crucial 9700 pro is v. cheap, (about £230 inc. VAT+shipping) and performs a little bit better than the Sapphire I think.

still probably the best "(performnce+features) / price"-card in the world

Of course well worth saving 40 bux for only a -1fps diffrence :) The chances are it's due to Crucial not having their memory as agressively timed.
