With my ex-7900GTX i notice that in 3d its clock is arround 290ish, memory is the same, but when it goes into 3d it jumps into 650. I can see how this is pretty nice having different clocks by a) saving power on 2d mode, b) not heating up in 2d mode.

But is it really safe? Jumping back and forth from 2d to 3d and making the gpu clock jump soo much..isen't it kinda like overclocking really high then underclocking really low..

They keep the memory speed the same in 2d/3d

100% safe, nVidia has been doing this since the 6 Series... It's not like Overclocking at all since the chip is designed to operate at those rates. There is no risk relating to having different 2D and 3D clocks.

The RAM can be kept at the same speed because it does not require as much power as the GPU aswell as not generating as much heat as it.

Since 6? My 6800GT is 2d 400/1100 / 3d 400/1100. Before Overclock 350/1000 2d/3d. Maybe only pci-e cards..

But its a huge jump though almost 50% clock increase back and forth.

Nope, I had a 6800GT AGP and it did the 2D/3D clock difference aswell.

This is my default settings. O/C is 400/1100..maybe its new revision models that does that? I got mine as soon as it came out in AUS.

My 6600gt goes from 2d 300/1100 to 3d 550/1100. Its agp also.

Strange..mine is a Albatron 6800GT. I am using it right now. Always has 2d on 350/1000...only thing difference about my gt is the heatsink which i replaced with a NVSilencer.

Maybe they changed it with the more later models? Ive had this same setting for now..2 years maybe..

my 7800GS+ is 400/1400 2d 500/1400 3d, with no side effects.

Since 6?

Since 5 (FX) actually.. Maybe even earlier than that.

AMD CPUs with PowerNow! or Cool'n'Quiet can jump clocks quite rapidly as well. So this type of thing must be totally safe by now.

my 7800GS is 275/1200 in 2d 430/1300 in 3d...

i may consder overclocking it beyond evga's factory overclock some day but for now 430/1300 is plenty
