I will be building me a new system to replace my Northwood setup that served me well for over 3 years :)

The new machine will have an Intel 975XBX mobo, Intel E6600 Conroe and an Nvidia 7950 video card. I'll need a beefy PSU to run this setup but I would really like to build something quieter this time around. My old system is housed in an old Thermaltake case with a bunch of fans that provide for good airflow but I am really tired of the noise levels, the PSU is an Enermax 470 and is pretty noisy too.

I've been out of the overclocking game for a few years now and didn't keep up with all the latest developments. Any suggestions on a quieter case, a PSU and any other ways to keep the noise down would be greatly appreciated.

Get a Seasonic S12 psu, 500 or 600w. They are the most quiet psu's without going with a fanless.

Antec P180.
QFT. Only complaint about it is its weight. It ways a freakin' ton. But it's dead silent.

As for powersupplies, I have an OCZ PowerStream 520 SLI and it's also dead silent.

Much appreciated, guys.

Now, if I go with the P180, whould I need to get additional fans (and if yes, which ones) to improve airflow inside the case without making the system too loud?

And what is a good/quiet CPU cooler that is powerful enough to cool not only the current Conroe but say a quad core Kentsfiled when they are released?

I don't own one myself, but I believe the P180 comes stacked with fans already mounted in the fan mountings already.

For a quiet cooler, I suggest a Zalman CNPS9500 series. When set to low speed, it's really quiet and still performs great.

For the ultra quiet the Zalman Reserator series can't be beat. I have my 3800 and 7800GT in the loop and it cools extremely well (thanks to Cool and Quiet), though my house is air-coned in the summer which helps. It should cool fine with the Conroe. Though when I go Conroe/G80 I'm just going air. The 3800 system and the Reserator will become my HTPC :)

everyone always recommends the things they have... weird :bleh:

cheap case thats silent - get a sonata II
expensive silent case - get a silent lian li with the noise reduction foam pre-installed and get a water cooling kit with a large radiator and low RPM fan.

theres a bunch of very quiet PSU's out there, so take your pick. mines pretty quiet, but i wish i had an EPS12V PSU.

Thanks for all the pointers guys. I've ordered the following:

Antec P180 revision B in Black
Seasonic S12-600 new revision (longer cables, sleeved too)
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe mobo
Scythe Ninja Plus CPU heatsink with a 120MM Fan (nobody has the Tuniq Tower 120 in stock dammit)
2x Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200.10 SATA2 16MB NCQ drives
2x OCZ DDR2 PC2-6400 XTC Platinum 1GB RAM sticks
XFX Nvidia 7950 GX2 videocard

I have my trusty Dell 24" LCD and an extra DVD burner so all that's left to get is the actual E6600 Conroe CPU. I can't believe my Northwood is finally retiring :)

Thanks for the offer, but I am in Canada and the shipping would cost us an arm and a leg. I've already paid for all the stuff, just waiting for the order to be shipped.
