...as a professional workstation card.
Comparison of the Quadro FX v. FireGL X1:

A performance margin of ~50% in some of the tests, and is roughly equal in others. Wierd!
it can also cook eggs as well as bacon on the underside of the card when in 3d mode.

Actually, no. The Quadro FX 2000 is clocked at 400/400, so it doesn't make more noise than the Fire GL
It does costs *3* times more, however. The Quadro FX 2000 is hella expensive!

One thing that I did notice from an earlier Firegl preview, while faster than the previous 8800 by a considerable margin there seemed to be major driver related slowdowns.
This is going to be an interesting area to watch, comparing these 2 cores (nV30 and R300)

Yes, that's what intrigued me about the whole article.
What sort of differences in the core are there between professional and mainstream parts? I'd always assumed the answer was basically "none", that some features were disabled (either by hardware or software) on mainstream cards. Hence SoftQuadro, and similar simple-ish hardware mods.

it's all about drivers. Quadro drivers are optimized for workstation class rendering programs.
Actually, since the NV25GL, there are *minor* modifications to the core. Those are very minor, but you still can't have *exactly* the same thing with SoftQuadro or similar utilities.
No idea if ATI also slightly modifies their workstation cards or not.
No matter what, the NV30GL does have an interesting hardware modification: 2048 PS instructions instead of 1024 on the NV30.
I really don't think that could be enabled on the NV30 with any type of software hack.
