I am trying to do a favor for a friend and as they say; no good deed goes unpunished. I have had to put his drive in an external enclosure since it has an x0000000071 stop error at boot, which pretty much means a reinstall. I have tried to get it back by all the standard tricks recommended for this error, unsuccessfully. I have now disinfected the drive on a different system utilizing an external drive enclosure. Now FAST is not designed to do what I want, as it will allow some custom selections, but most of the settings transferred will be the ones from the OS on the host system. Won't work, I need to be able to get the user profs, docs, et al off of the unbootable drive and onto a piece of removable media so that I can then migrate them back post format/reinstall. I have seen how good a lot of you are and any help would be greatly appreciated.

On the original drive, back up (copy) all the files from c:\windows\system32\config to c:\windows\system32\config\backup

Then copy all the files from c:\windows\repair and replace into c:\windows\system32\config

If the stop error was caused by registry corruption, the computer will probably boot from this hard disk now.

Basically all registry settings will be lost, but the system will be usable once again and documents can be copied back to the correct places. The backup registry hives can be loaded and exported in regedit to retain potentially important registry configurations.
