Creative recently released new sb live drivers claiming that they resolved many issues with win 2k/xp. So I installed them and things have been going well for several days now. However today I started getting the most annoying screw up I've ever seen. If I try to adjust the master volume slider in the volume control page I get a blue screen! Every single time, even if just I click on the slider and don't even move it still blue screens! It's always the same file that causes the blue screen too, ha10kx2k.sys one of the new sb live driver files.

I am this |-| close to taking my sb live value out and smashing it with a hammer.

now that sucks, im just using a bog standard driver that came with xp and its working fine:confused:

I'd be using the drivers that come with 2k but there's a problem with those as well. The bass and treble sliders in the advanced audio section are totally messed up. The sliders are at almost nothing but my sound is just blaring. Using any of the drivers off creatives site will fix that for me though.

After all the crap I've had with this card I think I'm going to stick in this old isa sb16 I have.

i too have a sblive value and updated my win2k drivers to the new creative (i guess unified architecture) drivers...

yet i havent gotten any bsod's since i installed the update

some effects and presets do sound better than the previous drivers i had which i never paid much attention to because they worked near-perfectly for me but this was in win98se before i upgraded to win2k sp2

i do notice some crackle and pops every now and then with these new drivers but nothing as serious as a bsod

what were u doing when u get the blue screens?

what is the capitol of montana?

did u first uninstall the previous drivers and then install the newer, updated ones?

exactly how close is this |-| close?

did u brush your teeth after eating?

what directsound r u using?

i hope i dont run into any problems as u have with my sblive value and new updated drivers

that would suck...

As I said all I was doing was adjusting the volume. It'll blue screen as soon as I touch the volume control even if that's the first and only thing I do after rebooting.

No I didn't uninstall the old ones, they were the drivers that came with win 2k, if I removed the sb live from device manager as soon as I rebooted the old drivers would be automatically reinstalled.

This |-| close is so close that I actually took the card out and had to fight the urge to break it. I put it down and watched some tv for a while to calm down.

Did I brush my teeth after eating? Nope.

Directsound, I guess you mean what version? Whatever comes with direct x 8.1.

I wouldn't really bother adjusting the volume from windows as you will get more distoration.

No probs for me as yet, and I know that others that I have spoken with have had the new drivers help with various games

the SB16 was creatives last good card! That card was awesome at the time of its release, but when they started making PCI cards, they became crappy! They used different chips or somin.. cant remember the company, but they did!

Is there any REAL alternative to creative cards nowadays?

HELL YEAH!! my fortissimo II knocks the sox off those 5.1 lives and even the audigys... crystal clear sound, runs my music perfectly through my big stereo....

Hercules GameTheater XP 5.1 is awesome, and completely wipes out the competition!... well.. creative :D

What about 3d audio APIs?

DO they support EAX? EAX2? EAX3? A3d? DS3d?

So they support those flawlesly?

What about soundfont support?

NeoGeo

well EAX is a creative thing i think... i dont really care either, cos im perfectly happy with my card :) because with me sound quality and clarity are the most important things. Features are nice but what good are features when the card is total crap?

Its like buying a malaysian car with a 1 litre engine, and a feature list as long as your arm!! I'd rather go for a base line BMW! No features but pure quality...

thats a really weird prob man. I've had several in the past w/ my sblive! (mp3+) but that 2nd last drv update creative did right b4 this recent one resolved most of them.

almost everything supports EAX 2, barely anything uses a3d or EAX 3, and I don't know why people think they need soundfonts.
As to ds3d, I assure you my nforce has a better ds3d implementation than an Audigy

If you want a real alternative, you don't look at features. You look at quality, and actual use of features.

what about it? i'm pretty sure you can do soundfont support in software, if you really want to

Without soundfont, MIDI is crap!

You can load a sample into memory and the sblive plays midi at 0% cpu usage

SavagePaladin

soundfonts have nothing to do with CPU usage.
hardware MIDI support has to do with CPU usage :p

The Hercules Game Theater XP 6.1 has support for everything you mentioned other than EAX 3.0 (of course, because of the chip it's based on).

It also has many more input/output options than any Creative card, costs less, and has zero driver problems.

gametheater xp rules.... one hell of a decent card :D

Exactly.

And all soundfont capable cards do midi 100% in hardware

Starscream

I think at this point all new sound cards regardless of whether they support sound fonts or not do midi playback 100% in hardware.

what he said.
Unless you buy crap, which sane people don't do.
