Wii games will cost $49.99 when Wii launch later this year, $10 less than both XBox 360 and also PS3's $59.99 games pricetag. But still $10 more expensive than Gamecube games titles for $39.99.

But in Europe it probably will cost 49.99, same price as both XBox 360 and PS3 pre-order games, upcoming Wii pre-order games cost 49.99 can be found at play.com (http://www.play.com/Games/Wii/NAVSUB/5-/RegionHome.html).

Yeah but I looked through Xbox 360 games catalogue at EBGames.com, only 3 Xbox 360 games cost $39.99 so far, 2 of them bundled with free faceplate.

First party Microsoft games were also $49.99 at launch, same as Nintendo's games for the Wii will be.

Also, read the link next time. It says first party Nintendo games will potentially be $49.99, not that all Wii games will be $49.99. Third parties can charge whatever they want. Also, that article is flat out wrong: "That would put games like Super Mario Galaxy on store shelves for $10 less than their first-party Xbox 360 equivalents."...uhh, Kameo was $49.99 at launch, and now it's down to $29.99, so I don't know what they're smoking.

$40 first party titles? What? When did this happen, I mean, I got a GC relatively late in its lifespan, but every first party game I've bought at launch has been 40 USD. Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin 2 was $50 until recently, Chibi Robo is still $50.

Oh well. $50 is still good compared to $60. I actually caught myself thinking "Wow, 99-Nights is launching at $50, thats pretty good...wait a minute, that's what the price always used to be!!! I've been tricked!"

I don't see a problem with games costing more. Development costs have incrased 10x and games have increased 10$. Big deal. I paid $59.99 for Sega Master System's "Phantasy Star" like 20 years ago.

The price of games have actually went down. Remember Zelda: Ocarina of Time? That thing was like $70+ when it was released.

I am with these two guys. I wish the cost of games were more. We want these devs to eat right?:o

Yeah, N64 games were released for between $60 and $70. I'm not even sure if there were many that were $50 when they were released for the N64, but I remember the Player's Choice games (basically the equivalent to Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits) were $40! I mean really, the BUDGET games were $40! I think that's pretty ridiculous, especially when you consider the effect inflation has had since then.

Edit: just for the fun of it, here's an interesting comparison:

What cost $40 in 1997 would cost $47.14 in 2005. (Inflation Calculator (http://www.westegg.com/inflation/))

Wow, a budget game on the N64 cost almost as much as a brand new game at release on a recent system. How the hell did the kids pay for their own games back then...

Useless tidbit of info:

Phantasy Star IV for the SEGA Genesis was around $100 when it was released...

Oh yeah, and Virtua Racing was as well. Jeez, for the price of two Genesis games you could get a new system...

Yea the prices of games have decreased from the old days but you have to realise that the volume of games that gets sold has increased too. so they make alot more than they used too, and not every game is worth brand new sticker price.

But the cost of developing games has increased tremendously. The development cost for several dozen PS1 games probably adds up to what it cost to develop Half-life 2.

I wish games over here were $49.99US

A new Xbox360 game in Australia is $120AUD or around $92US... Thats $92US for every new release game. PC games, while cheaper at $89AUD still equal $67UD.

However with Steam and Direct2Drive becoming a popular option with Aussie gamers, I don't think it will be to long before retail prices fall to match US prices. At least, I hope so.

I don't remember reading any announcements by Sony on PS3 gaming prices.

I would say the game prices were reasonable.
Plus there are some bargains to be had, Play-Asia anyone?
Works out cheap cheap for region free games shipped to the UK due to conversion rates and low postage costs.

Play.com do pretty much all new games for 40 inc VAT and delivery, which is 10 cheaper than the shops.

Bit of a bump and off topic, but has anyone used play-asia? I found even with postage games are roughly 50% than in store here. I'm even gonna try import Dark Sector, which was banned here.
