Hi there.

I have a aging AGP system that I want to upgrade the graphics card on. I cant afford to do a whole system upgrade for a couple of years so I want something to last a little while.

I was looking at the XFX 6800XT which I can get for 86 here in the UK. It has shader model 3, 256bit bus but only has 8 pipes.

I can also get for around the same price either a Radeon X1600pro (80) SM3, 12 pipes but only 128bit bus, or a X850pro (115) fast core and mem, 12 pipes but no SM3

I know this is primarily a Nvidia forum but what would people honestly pick?

My system spec is given in my profile.

Thanks for your help.

a 6800XT AGP will be plenty, i upgraded from 5900XT to a 6600GT and its ran everything fine, obviously i struggle with AA @ high reso's but it doesnt fase me bout AA..

Going for the XFX 6800XT will do...

ATI 9600pro - 400/400(core/mem), 128mb/128bit, 4pipeline, no SM3

XFX 6800XT - 350/1000(core/mem), 256mb/256bit, 8pipeline, SM3

I would chose the 6800XT personally, i had a 6600 a while back and upgraded to a 6800GT, the difference was unreal, i could play BF2 on full settings(apart from AA)

The 6800XT isnt really a whole lot different than a 6600GT though. Its better, but not as good as a 6800GT (it has half the pipelines).

Well, I went from an OC'd 9800 Pro to a 6800GT, and it was a big leap even at 1280x1024. So, you can expect a similar FPS leap from your 9600 to a 6800XT.

I recently purchased a 6800XT for a spare machine to replace a 9550SE. Big difference, plus I was able to unlock all the pipelines and shader units. So its basically a 6800GT at a lower clock speed.

you can always fix lower clock speed

Yes... he can always OC it, but how far is a toss up. Most cards that unlock will not overclock worth a crap vs if it was locked, it would overclock quite nicely.

What brand is your 6800XT crainger, how many pipes and vertex shaders did you open that was stable enough to use and could you overclock it when unlocked?

Ps- That XFX 6800XT i listed is basically a 6800GT card but with half the pipes and one less pixel shader.

Its a Leadtek I believe, I unlocked all the pipes and units (16pp, 6vs) and have no artifacts. I plan to overclock if I replace the stock cooling. Right now it idles at 50C. A bit high for me, plus it howls like a banshee even with 2D fan speed at 50%. 3D fan I always leave at 100% (can't hear it over games or movies anyway)

50c at idle, wow... i have a BFG 6800GT that was running 60c/idle-72c/load with the stock cooler. Now i have a zalman VF700-CU vga cooler on it and it now runs 50c/idle- 60c/load along with some ASC. Aftermarket vga coolers a must and they rule! :super:

50C seems alot next to my 7800GT, it idles at 30C and never breaks 40C underload (Watercooled ofcourse)

youd be surprised at how much of your computer you could upgrade for not very much money. you could easily move to PCIe for under $200. then just save a little while longer and you could get a 7800gt or 7900gt.

Thanks for all the info guys.

Has helped me make my mind up.

I decided against doing a whole system upgrade as I would need a new motherboard, new CPU, new RAM and new graphics card all at the same time and working for the NHS and having a fiance at uni, theres not a lot of spare cash flying around!!!

Thanks again.

let's see... cpu, mobo, ram, and video card for under $200 (even if the mobo has on board video it would be complete crap compared to his current 9600pro) i'd like to know where you do your shopping

i priced out the absolute minimum for a complete upgrade for myself and i couldn't go any cheaper than ~$400 without getting the cheapest pci-e mobo and a cpu that isn't going to be much faster than my current one
