I scored somewhat of a gem (for FREE), a Vaio FX140 a couple months ago. It has a bad power plug, which I'll resolder no prob. I have a 256 stick to throw in with the other 256, so it'll have 512mb... nice... ... no dead pixels on the 14" XGA, ... nice... P3 700... bleh. Well, I'm only gonna use it for the net and stuff, but there are a couple custom business apps that I'm actually gonna need some more cpu HP for...

I can get a 1.4 P3 1mb (lotsa cache, niiiice) for around $50 right now.

Worth it?

(crazy)

So... ya think my battery life's gonna take a dump? I tend to think so, unless I use a pin trick on the new cpu... I think I'll have to anyway, I do believe the 1.4 is a 133fsb, and the laptop is a 100, so I might need to tinker with fsb and voltage a bit. Hell, if I can get the voltage down to 1.4-1.5, speed @ 900-1100mhz, with 1mb l2 and 512mb RAM it oughtta be quite capable, and give me at least 1.75hrs battery life...

Has anyone else around here played with S370's and remember anything? :D

Wait, werent the high clock speed Pentium 3s a lot different than the "normal" ones under 1.2Ghz?

For some reason I keep thinking that they were very under-performing or had some problems. I'd look into it a bit more before buying one.

EDIT: They dont seem to mention anything here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentium_3

So maybe I'm just thinking of the Itanium... err... the Itanic

I'll see if I can find any reviews first.

EDIT2: I found a review. It seems like it performs really well... so I'd say go for it. It probably will shorten the battery life, but I'm sure its much much faster than your current CPU.

i know the athlon xp's could be converted to mobiles by bridging a jumper. maybe the same can be done with the P3?
