I am trying to push check out. Having issues.

Thinking about getting:
E6400
Gigabyte DS3
OCZ 2gb kit
X1900XT or 7900Gt

To replace my:

A64 3700+
Asus A8N SLI x8 Flavor
2x 6600 GT (They were free)
2 Gb Corsair kit

Parts that remain:
Antec Neo 480 PSU
Sony DVD writer
run of the mill 250gb SATA II from WD
Lian-Li 65b

First off i figure this upgrade would be a pretty big improvment some games since i now have a 20.1' LCD get a little Chug to em. So here my question the core 2 upgrade (Ati-$1000 Nvidia-$940). With my PSU i considered going X2 with an updated SLI perhaps 7900GT but i think i would have a power issue. Of course a single card X2 upgrade would only cost $500.

So i guess i am asking you to tell me i am crazy and should just buy the Core 2 setup. Or just crazy.

hold on to your 6600GT for a little while longer and get a DX10 vid card. besides that, it looks awesome

Oh but its so hard to hold on. It can be money well spent else where the 6600GT SLi rocked every thing on my 17 Lcd but the 20.1 is killing em. I mean thats another 3 or so monthes. :D Or is my next gen time frame a bit skewed i figure around the first of the year?

no the timeframe is actually pretty good. but to me, its pointless to pay $300-400 on a card when there is something better right around the corner.

maybe thats just me...

Thats the problem in the computing world....there is "always" something better just around the corner :D

Vista isnt going to out until at least Jan'07, so if you are looking for a card to hold you over for around 6 mnths, you could always go with the cheaper 7800GT.

So we would roughly have DX10 in Jan 07. And by then we should be amid next gen. But at that point i would wait for the second release much like 6 family to 7 family. My pc before my current was old as the hills. So i think despite the better interests of those who use my money (The lady friend). I will buy this. DX10 will be nice but i always stay about one step behind pick up price cuts. But i cant pass up conroe and cant justify $500 for a marginal A64 upgrade so i am gonna shell it out.

So it can be just you for now Vin. I also want to get all my electronics up to date now before i switch jobs. Working on my piercing apprenticeship, So if any one needs a new hole in their body let me know.

If your not worried at all about the money then get the 7900GT and then just upgrade when the time comes for the G80 series.

QFT.

as for the card : 7900GT is cheaper but slower , X1900XT is faster but cost more.
if you are tight-budget get the 7900.

X1900XT is right about where i want performance wise. and theres a $60 roughly diff between 7900GT and X1900Xt. And as stated the Ati solution beats the 7900GT atleast and with the recent price cut isnt a bad deal. I dont have the cash in budget to go to 7900 GTX or 7950GX. I have roughly $1000. Still have yet to push check out
