Sold my 7800 GT CO SE and now need a new video card. Any ideas?
I only play at the rez of 1280x768 as it is the native res of my LCD. So I was thinking it mught be possible to get away w/ just a 7600GT. But with the 7900GTs so cheap I am not sure it is worth the drop in pixel pushing power to get the 7600. so confused

Bad idea! Why would you SLI with such a low resolution?

Exactly. Also, people just don't understand how truly awesome the 7600GT really is.

For example, the average settings when I game:

Resolution: 1920x1440
AA: 2xQ AA
AF: 16x AF
Vsync: Enabled
TB: Enabled

And all in-game IQ settings maxed or really close to it. Granted, I'm not playing FEAR or Oblivion- but it plays perfectly smooth in Quake4, HL2, HL2: LC, HL2: EP1 (granted, in LC and EP1 there is [b]no[/i] AA), and FarCry. I can't wait to get my second 7600GT, that'll be a blast. :D :D :D

Depends on budget. The 7900 GT is awesome for sure but don`t underestimate the 7600.
I am used to a x1900 XTX that obviously has great performance.
I recently bought a notebook that comes with a 7600 GO 512mb wich is not as fast as a 7600 GT for desktop and still i am amazed.
With all the performance i got with the x1900 i totally forgot that gaming without AA is not really much of a loss.
I am playing Prey on my notebook @1280x800 and it runs smooth as hell.

My advice to you: 7900GT if you got the money. 7600 GT will do the job just fine for quite a while if not. Should be good enough untill games require DX10.

SLI and all this stuff is for enthusiasts that like to runbenchmarks and feel the need for extremely high resolutions. For gaming @1280 both of your mentioned cards will do just finewithout SLI.

Why would anyone get two 7600GTs when you can afford a single 7900GT? Leave room for another 7900 if/when you get the cash!

Well, consider this:

I'm playing Quake4 with everything maxed (I even have it set to "Ultra") @ 1920x1440 with 2xQ AA, 16xAF, vsync enabled, TB, trilinear filtering enabled, and all other goodies maxed as well.

And, it is very playable. I don't have fraps installed on my system but I'd guess I'm averaging 45fps easy. Could be greater.

Not bad for a card people seem to be downing.

I didn't say it was a bad card by any means. I'm just saying that buying two in SLI is a waste if you can afford a single 7900GT. This way you can add on another one later on. If you buy two 7600GTs you're stuck.

I've actually heard of someone who was able to remove two 7600GTs and replace them with a single 7900GT. It was quite a feat, but it is possible.

Seriously though I know what you mean. I recently was deciding whther to buy a Raptor 150 or two Raptor 74s. Choice was easy. Get the 150 and add to it later.

So one 7900GT will be better than two 7600GTs, if you plan to get another 7900GT later on down the road.

yeh... it's a great card, i haven't had one, but they look amazing for the price you pay, it out-paces ANY 6800.... that's saying alot because there were some really fast 6800 Ultra's around, but from what i've seen the 7600 GT will come ahead in every benchmark, truly an amazing budget card
