SuSE 8.0 NVIDIA video driver cfg problems

I have a new box running SuSE 8.0 with an MSI K7N2G motherboard w/ Nvidia integrated GF4 MX video chip. I have struggled for the better part of a week to get the NVIDA video driver 1.0-4191 to work on the box using 3D mode. No joy.

I've followed the readme and documentation to the letter and appreciate all the helpful info in the other post but none seem to be able to get this thing started. Key excerpts from XF86Config file and XFree86.0.log appended below in the hopes that someone can point out why the thing won't run in 3-D mode using the NVIDIA drive (it runs OK in 2-D in X using the nv module from XFree86).

X starts and then goes to a black screen that doesn't do anything thereafter; I have to Crl-Alt-Del to restart the system. As you can see, the GLX module doesn't load even though all the libs and symlinks are correct per the documentation.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If you do a search here for glxModuleData, you come up with this thread from not all that long ago:

At the end, I've quoted a SuSE admin guide on the drivers that tells basically exactly how to install them.

You probably haven't gotten rid of the drivers that SuSE ships with, is my guess.

The other thing is, this is an nForce or nForce2 motherboard (according to the PCI vendor IDs, which are all nVidia), so you have to be using Option "NvAgp" "1". That might help.

If only life was that easy...but it never is.

I experienced all the issues in the suggested thread before and after reading it. The damn thing still won't run. All the libraries and symlinks are correct per the NVIDIA documentation and the many posts on this list.

When I edit XF86Config to load the glx module and use the XFree86 nv driver, X crashes (after successfully loading the glx modules, successfully loading the nv driver, and while loading the glx extensions) with the error:

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

When I edit XF86Config to load the glx module and use the NVIDIA driver, X hangs on a black screen (after successfully loading the glx module, while loading the NVIDIA driver). Nothing can be done except Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart the system.

I don't have any old dummy NVIDIA drivers installed as suggested. I uninstalled the mesasoft libraries. I have installed the rpms from NVIDIA, checked and rechecked the documentation and made sure everything is right. I even tried all combinations of the NvAGP option (0,1,2,3) in XF86Config.

This really sucks.

The only thing I can think of at this point is that the latest NVIDIA drivers for Linux don't support the GForce4 MX Integrated GPU chipset on this new motherboard yet. Has anyone gotten this 1.0-4191 linux driver version to work with this integrated video chipset (0x01f0) yet on any linux distribution other than SuSE?

I'm ready to dump this board and go back to my old box; but I really don't want to do that 'cause it works great under Windoze. This is the first time I ever found anything to work better under Windoze than Linux. Pls help restore my faith.

after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. That's not the error. That's a message printed by one of X's clients (either your window manager, or something else) saying "the server died". You'd get it also if you could start up X normally, and then exited it.

With Driver "nvidia", it just hangs at a black screen? How long have you let it sit? There are some MX cards that take forever (up to 5 minutes) to load X, reason currently unknown. They may be probing the monitor, or they may be doing something else.

Does driver 3123 work? If there are no RPMs you'll have to compile it from source, but that's not too hard. Note that the kernel module's name in driver 3123 is not "nvidia.o" anymore, it's "NVdriver", so change your /etc/modules or /etc/modules.conf or /etc/rc.modules (or whatever the relevant file on SuSE is) accordingly.

I dumped the NVIDIA 1.0-4191 rpm's (kernel and glx) from the box. I ran the 'switch2nv" script and started X. I ran YAST online update and downloaded the NVIDIA 1.0-3123 rpm's (kernel and glx) from SuSE. I ran the 'switch2nvidia' and switch2nvidia_glx' scripts. I edited modules.conf to load the 'NVdriver' kernel module; I even ran 'modprobe NVdriver' after reboot just in case. I checked that the libraries and symlinks were in order. I edited 'XF86Config' with the suggested entries from the sample file in the docs.

I started X and waited 10 f@#$%^&g minutes while the box sat on a black screen. I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart the box. Here's the dump from the XFree log:

Does it work with Option "NvAgp" "0"? Since it can't verify AGP usage, that might at least let X start. Of course, that's assuming the reason it's stalled there is because of that warning, and not because of the hardware (which I'm starting to suspect more and more anyway...).

The good news is that I got the NVIDIA 3D running; the bad news is that I had to install SuSE 8.1 to do it. I came to that conclusion after looking through SuSE's hardware compatibility list and discovered that the chipset was only supported by SuSE using ver 8.1.

I am not sure whether I could have gotten by just by upgrading my 8.0 distro to the 2.4.19 kernel used by the 8.1 distro. I have bad memories of trying to replace a stock SuSE distro kernel with a custom kernel version not released by SuSE.

I also didn't want to upgrade to the 8.1 distro for other reasons; it was a choose the lesser of 2 evils thing at that point.

Anyway, it was rather straightforward and simple to get the NVIDIA 3D to load and run under 8.1. Thanks a bunch for all the help.

BTW, when I exit X now using the NVIDIA 3D, the system goes to a black screen; I can't get any text interface to return. So I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to reboot and get back to a cmd line interface. Very annoying. Any ideas how to solve this one?

Unfortunately, no. There are a bunch of people all having that type of problem, and AFAIK no one has figured out what the issue is.

Does it do the same thing when you Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F2?
