I've just acquired some cash, and I feel the need to order something for my PC, but I'm having a hard time.

I've been leaning back and forth between an eVGA 7900GT KO, and a Dell 2007FPW, which happen to be on sale right now. I can't afford both.

I realize DX10/G80/R600 is right around the corner, so I could always use step up for a G80, if they're even released within 90 days.. but I'm really digging that monitor. Would my 7800GT be up to the task? What kind of performance difference am I looking at going from my current 1280x1024, to 1680x1050?

I just got a 20" Samsung 1680x1050 monitor and I really like it. Your present card should be up to the task.

You might have to back off on the antialiasing but at 1680x1050 it will probably look as good during gaming.

I second the monitor suggestion.

Its "Da $H!+" as the kids say. ;)

Then next year when a G80 type card becomes "necessary" you can get one then.

Go ahead, get the screen...

But don't complain when your 7800GT can't push the frames ;)

On a 2007? It's only a 20.1" @ 1680x1050 I think. Maybe not everything maxed, but I think he'll be happy with it.

I'm going to try and sell my current monitor, and see if I can get a 7900 to keep me happy until G80, I think.

Well my 6800GT is doing just fine still. I usually play at 1680x1050 with 2xAA and 4XAF with no problem. Then again I don't need 2.43x10^7th fps in HL2 to fell like its playable.

But thats me. :D

Yeah, I don't think I'd be happy with low/no AA again.

With a 7800GT he'll be able to play every game @ 1680x1050 with 2xQ AA/16xAF and all other options maxed no problem. I know cause my 7600GT can do so only I'm playing at 1920x1440. And if my 7600GT can play all games at such settings at that higher resolution, I know the 7800GT would be able to do it.

I just got my 2007FP and the 6800GT can do alright with most games @ 1600x1200. Depends on the game of course.

My 78's chug in spots with FEAR maxed @ 1680x1050. Please don't tell me your playing FEAR maxed on a lone 7600GT...

Sure he'll be able to play at that resolution, but it won't look good.

Why get a huge monitor if your going to have to lower the settings to make it play well? I'm sure your 7600GT is all maxxed out? Probably not.

For the most part it is. Granted, I'm referring to HL2, FarCry, and Quake for has everything set to "High". Of course, Ultra would kill my system (though it'd probably work once I get my 2nd 7600GT).

Remember, 2xQ AA w/16xAF- shouldn't stress a 7800GT that much, even at 1680x1050. If my 7600GT (and even my 6800GT before this card) can do this, I'm sure his 7800GT would be more than up to the task.

I'd post some screenshots with fraps running- but I haven't figured out the whole screenshot deal yet. If you'd like I'll post 'em, just tell me how to capture the screenshot.

No, actually, I'm not. But I'd assume a single 7800GT could pull it off. 2xQ AA isn't that stressing, but looks great. I'm sure he'd be able to play it with rather high IQ if not maxxed. Again, it is only 2xQ AA.

yea i wanted to get a second card, but i decided G80/R600 would be a better choice.
