How should I go about this

My buddy brought over his 100GB USB HD so I could try and recover some of the music off of it. He told me it got unplug and plugged in really fast over and over. Now when you plug in the drive it asks if you want to format the drive and doesnt like you look at any of the data.

Ive never really dived into Harddrive recovery so what are some basic steps I should start with first?
