That is completely correct, if you have a P4 (even the new pressler), you SHOULD upgrade to C2D; however if you have an A64 X2 already, there isn't really any point of going to C2D unless you NEED performance and have money coming out of your ass. That's why I wont go to AM2 yet.
NEW SYSTEMS
Umm...I must chime in here...Sure the company I work for isn't "HUGE", but trust me, Core 2 Duo is already mainstream at our company. I have sold (and delivered) at least 20 of our Core 2 systems, actually outpacing my sales on Netburst or A64/x2 systems easily this month. The prices arn't much above "mainstream" (unless you consider mainstream a $299 system, wich some might)...We sell one at $639, one at $799, and another system in the +$1000 range. We also do custom PC's, and we are selling those at +$1000 without ANY resistance from the customers on pricing once they check out performance... Quote some benchmarks and it's a done deal.
UPGRADES
Now before you all accuse me of being a fanboy, when a customer comes in for an upgrade, I ask them point blank "Do you have an Athlon 64 or an older P4". If they answer Athlon, I mention that Core 2 has taken the performance crown, but a lesser upgrade on 939/am2 would be a better way to go. People that want to upgrade from a Netburst chip, I ALWAYS tell them Core 2 (unless they are workstations for a business, then the cheapest will do fine).
Granted, we worked closely with Intel on this, and have plenty of availabilty atm (that could change day by day, as the chips are selling like hotcakes). But I give it 2 months until Core 2's become "Mainstream mid range computers"...
I agree with what your saying to a certain degree. Customers are looking at price and your looking at profit margine. I can't imagine a customer that uses a pc for word, email, web, pictures so on to need more then a AM2 X2 3800 @ $150.00 @ newegg prices and a Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ $203.00. Not to mention the Nvidia 6150 intergraded Video with DVI. I think its cheaper to go with AMD unless its a gamer that walks in the door.
My 2 cents.

Unlike AMD, Cyrix had never manufactured or sold Intel designs under a negotiated license. Cyrix's designs were the result of meticulous in-house reverse-engineering. So while AMD's 386s and even 486s had some Intel-written microcode software, Cyrix's designs were completely independent. Focused on removing potential competitors, Intel spent many years in legal battles with Cyrix, claiming that the Cyrix 486 violated Intel's patents. (Just as Intel did with every other x86 CPU manufacturer right up until 1998.)
What makes you think that the DMCA blocks reverse engineering in hardware?

Dell is selling AMD because they were losing market share on their servers to other companies shipping servers with opterons.
the main reason AMD pulled their 2x1m athlon 64 from the market is because they need those cores as Opterons to fill Dells order.
What is AMD going to make more money on?
Athlon64's sold to the public?
or the same cores sold to Dell as Opterons?
simple business, supply vs. demand.
Dell was getting killed on the server market, they did what they had to to survive.
AMD knows that they dont hold the performance crown on desktop parts, but they still kick ass on the server side. And THAT is where the money is.

This will never happen for 2 reason. Anti trust laws( I think A mega company with 75% of the market qualifies)and democrats in power. EOS
Beside that, Dell is on the verge of an F with the BBB and most people don't like thier tech help in India, no offence to any one from india. Most people fall for a dell once, becuase of the flashy just for you commericial making you feel all gooshy and happy, and then they realiz to get the rebate you must get a recipt, a sales order, a bar code fill out 15 pages of work, photo copy it and have it noterized, then you can get the rebate ehich must be cashed 12/1/67, the the warranty doesn't cover any thing and that they catch on fire. And most people are idiots whe it comes to tech and don't get that 2500 for a 2800 and a ATI X300 isn't a good deal!!!!! Intel, thanks to is core 2 will have a very large niche with gamers and IT support, and all it takes to topple stock is for some one to run a story on how AMD is donating it's profits to the taliban and getting rid of all it's employees, and that will scare the owners of stock to go into a sell fest, and killing sales.

You clearly have no clue how a business operates. Regardless of what contracts AMD signs, their stock will go down if their processors don't sell well. And they won't, becasue anyone with a brain is going to buy a Core 2.
So i guess the server market is just peanuts, where they still majorly outsell Intel and are actually trying to crank out as many opterons as they possibly can, with their whole server ship production accounted for until next march....
In another interesting tidbit, the next supercomputer that wil be built by IBM will be delivered to the atomic energy comission, and is a hybrid design with 16000 cell processors and 16000 AMD opterons working together, for the first peta flop computer in the world(1000 terraflops)....

I don't know what makes you think Core 2 won't hit mainstream until next year. Intel knows they have a winner on their hands, and it is in their best interests to push this chip into the mainstream ASAP. The price is right, and the motherboards are available. All Intel has to do is ramp up production (which will take a few months), and bam - Core 2 hits mainstream.
And you forgot,AMD has something to compete with it by then too....:p
Right now,out of 14 fabs available, they have only 2 that can actually produce the core 2 duo's at all,and it'll take time to convert current ones or build new fabs to increase that production significantly.....
you do know he cant respond, right?
