View Full Version : Just got a GeForce FX 5800 Ultra
aww volt, i compleated all but one post prior to yours and then after sumbiting my last one i saw your post and went back to edit it to say state that i was happy to abide by your requst. that is not realy worth rolling eyes at me over is it? regardless, i do aprecate you not baning me and back to topic;
wow that cooler looks even meaner dissabled, and looking even more forward to seeing the card with the waterblock straped to it, you might be the very well be the water cooled nv30 seen on the net. :D
yeh and it seems that cardz below this have the same headroom with good active/air cool setup as they do w/H20... and this may be one of the first VERY practical uses of water cooling to give this card and it's ilk a jump in perf. un-attainable by any air cool setup...
:):D
Great images BladeRunner! Now what is the plan in getting better cooling here? I've been dying to see someone do this card right in the cooling department. Please keep us inform or show us some of your makings, forget about benchmarks, I am more interested in coolness as in tempertures and even noise levels. Just my drift.
This is what Nvidia should have done in the first place, get some cards out into the community for modifying/testing and suggestions. Once people feel like they have a little say so then they also feel more like the card is also theirs, making them want to buy one even more. Now that would be better PR from Nvidia which so far I would (not that it really matters) give them a big fat F+.

FX flow is very easy to remove from the card, even easier than the stiff pinned sink on a Radeon 9700.
The the top part of the clear cover has 4 screws retaining it. The bottom clear part which has the fan mounted in it is fixed to the copper heatpipe unit with two screws. the ram sink on the backside is made with 4 pins that go through holes in the card and then holes in the copper frontside cooler. It's then retained by two spring steel pieces that just push down and slide out. all that is left now is the main copper heatpipe unit and two screws through the card with a spring steel retainer pressing on the back area of the GPU is all that holds it on. The worst part was removing the remains of the Chewing Gum thermal pad from the GPU.
The water-cooler is made and fitted to the card, (but I need confirmation before I can post images, as this is a joint project with other parties)
I'm just about to install it in my water cooled system and if it works the FX will be silently cooled better than any heatsink fan, (especially in my system with a current coolant temp of 9.3C).
I was not 100% sure the cooler would fit. I actually made it to images of the bare FX shown on the net before Xmas, as I didn't have a real card. It required a fair amount of educated guessing on my part, along with using an FX image I printed out at actual real life card size. On getting the card it just required two areas on the ram blocks to be milled slightly and some retaining holes drilled and it appears to fit just fine. I also decided to make this cooler a one slot solution if I could, so this might be the only silent and cool, one slot FX 5800 Ultra in existance. :p
off now to swap it out with the R9700..........
any pics?!?
/me wants to see :D

Can't wait to see your latest creation Bladerunner. I remember the awesome block you built for that Asus Gf3 that Mr. Jen-Hsun Huang had you send to him. Strictly professional work there man :afro:

I'd like to show you the pics but I still have to talk to other people, and there are other more important factors taking most of my time atm. I'd love to be able to spend every waking hour on this and other cooling projects, but like everyone I need to eat & pay bills . It's also just typical this project and another have happend right now when my real life job is at it's busiest so that I'm working 7am to 8pm or later 7 days a week and near enough too tired to be bothered with it when I do get home at night.
Not trying to paint a sob story here, just trying to get over the reasons. The fact I lost my o/s and back-up discs to the break in a few weeks back hasn't helped either. Anyway rest assuered I'll bring the topic back when I have more.
Yes don't over do it. Let us know as soon as you can if you would. Thanks.
ya i too am most excited to see this but i also understand that you must live up to your obligations to others as well. :afro:
as for the breakin, i am very sorry to hear about that. it is a saddining to know how much dirty under-handed crap like that goes on in this world and even more depressing to know how we all wind up suffering because of it. :(

Still not got any feedback from those concerend regarding the pics yet
Anyway had a chance to get rivia tuner in and have a look the card. It is reported as a Nvidia Geforce FX 5800 Ultra and the clock speeds are set by default at 450 core / 900 ram, (using the 42.68 drivers).
Raising the clocks to 500 / 1000 gets lots of artifacts in 2d and much weirdness in 3d.
Like I said this card was sent to me as dead so this should not be taken as and example, and would of course be no use as a indicator for benchmarking purposes.

Yeah, it sounds like something was actually wrong with the card you have. The default for the FX Ultra is 500/1000. I suspect that since you have problems , just going to the "stock" speed, there is something rather terminal with the card you have, and it must be one of the rejected or "fail" cards.

Now with that, I suspect you may be able to do 500/1000 :) .

Don't you read? He said the card was given to him as "dead" so it's obviously getting artifacts not because of the heat...
wow BladeRunner that is slick!
i take it the "fx" is just for looks though?

Not JUST for looks, to design around. How else do you think watercooling is designed?;)

Well not exactly since it looks like it's mounted like any GPU cooler (2 holes). Though it is very esthetic, I love it :)
wow, your work has always impressed the hell out of me and this just makes my jaw drop.
