View Full Version : Splinter Cell & AA= Lockup
I know that with a GF4 Ti 4200 applying FSAA usually causes some serious frame lost depending on the level of AA but it normally does not lock up games. With the Splinter Cell Demo only applying 2x AA causes a lockup. In addition, the recommended system in the readme calls for DirectX 9. What DX9 features are included in SC seeing as the only DX9 compatible cards at the moment are the ATI Radeon 9500/9700.
The other oddity, in the first SC Demo a 1600x1200 resolution was available. In this new demo, the highest available resolution is 1280x1024. Weird.
Seeing as this game badly needs FSAA, anyone else get these lockups by using it?
Thanks
P4 2.53 GHz / 533MHz
512MB RDRAM
GF4 Ti 4200 64MB (Detonator 30.82)
DirectX 8.1
TB Santa Cruz Sound
Windows XP (SP1)

I would say that you dont have enough video memory. When I ran the Ravenshield demo @ 1280*1024 + 2xFSAA, my pc would lock up also. Im guessing that unless you have 128mb video ram, you cant use FSAA unless you use a very low resolution.

just run 1600x1200 with high settings, it looks fine and runs better than any 2xAA or Quincunx;)

Can't run 1600x1200 according to this reply that I received from my posting at the Splinter Cell Forum:
SC-PC doesn't use a single DX9 graphic feature. There are 3 distinct driver paths in SC-PC:
-GF3/4Ti ---> Shadow buffer algorithm, light beam intersection, detail texturing, reflection, pixel shaders 1.1, DX8.NV API (~xbox)
-Radeon 8500/9700 ---> Shadow projector algorithm, detail texturing, reflection, DX8.1 API, pixel shaders 1.1
-GF2/4MX, Radeon 7500 ---> Shadow projector algorithm, no pixel shader, almost no reflection, register combiners
With 32 MB cards, you are limited to 640x480 resolution and shadow resolution is limited to Medium as is shadow details and effects quality.
With 64 MB cards, you are limited to 1280x1024 resolution and shadow resolution is limited to Medium
With 128+ MB cards, you can go up to 1600x1200 and have shadow resolution to High.

My GF4 Ti 4200 is a 64MB.
Thanks for posting that info here, maybe this could be made a sticky, as the game is due out next week?
I'm able to run it fine with Quincunx AA at 1024x768 on my GF4 Ti4200 (128 MB). But oddly enough, in the new demo thermal vision doesn't seem to work. Either that, or the keys I have mapped to it are kaput...
Think I'll just uninstall it and wait three days for the real deal. :D

lol, that sucks. I love thermal vision. oh well, hmm... yeah, 64MB is gonna hurt, heh, I think 128 is gonna soon also, but I've been running most my games at 1600x1200 and I have been getting good performance. Like 30+ FPS. Textures are sharp and jaggies are somewhat reduced. I don't like it tho how in BHD demos you can't choose 1600x1200. But in SC Demo 2 I've been using 1600x1200 and it runs pretty good, I just really suck at the game:p
thermal vision doesn't appear until the 2nd mission.
