View Full Version : GeForce 7900 GS Preview
We have posted a brief preview of NVIDIA's new mainstream GeForce 7900 GS GPU. XFX and EVGA provided samples of their graphics cards that will be using the new GPU and we tested them in a single and mixed-vendor multi-GPU configurations.

For even more excitement, we tested single GPU performance on a newly inagurated system that features a Core 2 Duo running on Intel's P965 Express chipset!
Graphics cards based on the GeForce 7900 GS will be available today with prices starting at $199.
Single GPU performance was tested with the Intel-based system. Using the XFX GeForce 7900 GS, Doom 3 performance is compared to the BFG GeForce 7800 GTX OC, which debuted in June of 2005 at a suggested price of $599.
Check it out here.

I just read through your preview and these cards look amazing. I had to laugh when I saw the part about you forgetting to plug in the power because I did the exact same thing last night. :D :rofl
Great job, Mike!
Nice! :D The 7900GS is an awesome card for the price.
In the Fear benchmark with sofshadows on did you enable AA as well as softshadows? Or is softshadows just a sramerate killer?

Nice preview! One thing I was wondering about was how many pixel/vertex units has the 7900GS? The performance is still excellent for the price but I´m wondering what was cut compared to the GT and GTX except the clocks. Do I assume correctly that the "GS" name is replacing the "nu" (or vanilla) card name?

20 pixel
7 vertex

AA was disabled when I benchmarked with softshadows on. Can both features be enabled at the same time?
Nice preview! One thing I was wondering about was how many pixel/vertex units has the 7900GS?I dropped the ball there. I was working on the article right up until the NDA expired. I had planned on including a feature comparison chart, but didn't get around to it. With the weekend coming up, I should have time to include some of the information that was left out.
I believe that the industry's had a hard time following up the success of the 5900xt at the $199 price point...
However, this card, I believe, hands down has the new price/performance crown, and may go down as one of the best bangs for the buck... Damn that's a good featureset and awesome performance for the money. I'm not buyin' until Jan-Feb, but I'm sure even around then, a variant of this card will still be around to give me some G7X lovin'.
Nice writeup, Mike.

No problem Mike, it was a preview so I didn´t expect that I´d see a feature chart until an actual review but I knew that one of the informed guys here on nvnews would respond if I ask (thanks Kyle!). Now we only need to know if the GS has a lasercut quad or just bios disabled. :D
