blame Nvidia's RSX GPU,
because it's a gutted, downgraded
NV47 / G70 / G71 based GPU with
low pixel fillrate (fewer ROPs)
low bandwidth (128-bit)
and probably fewer
vertex & pixel shaders & texture units
(less than 8:24,24)

I hope you brought a fire extinguisher.

this shot is OLD, from a egm months ago.
I'd wait for tgs, which is in 2 weeks. The game will be playable there.

Sorry, but I can't believe it. It's looks like PS2 game that's all. Would Sony release next-gen console on pair with PS2 I don't thing so.

Dot3 bump mapping makes miracles for reptile skin ;) The first posted image shows the models under bad (or unfinished) lighting. The other image looks okay and I've no doubt the PS3 (or any modern computer) can pull that type of graphics easily.

As of lately it seems that everything playstation related is a victim of own Sony hype. No doubt the launch dèbacle is making people overreacting as well.

Either way ; PS3 should be able to pump out massive amounts of polygons. There's no excuse ; No displacement nor bumpmapping trickery.

Dot3 bump and offset (parallax) mapping are still the way to go. Unreal 3 engine uses abundantly both techniques for delivering incredible scenes with a comparatively light polycount. We're still years away from animating in realtime hundreds of models on screen with several hundred thousands polygons each and -honestly- is just a waste of resources when with some little tricks you can pull similar graphics at a fraction of the computational power needed.

I'm not defending Lair; in the first image it loooks no better than a Doom 3 MOD, while the 2nd and the third are pretty similar to an Xbox 360 game like Ninenty Nine nights But people expecting revolutionary graphics over the Xbox 360 or a modern PC are illuding themselves.

I don't know why anyone even listens to this troll, his entire life on this forum was to either trash the PS3 with uneducated and false posts or just look stupid by posting comments without anything to back it in any form.

Uh, I don't see why it couldn't look like that if games like Gears of War can look as good as they do. It depends on the talent that is working on it in part, but it certainly isn't impossible by any stretch.

I can't say I care much one way or another since I don't honestly plan on getting a PS3 anytime in the near (or not so near) future, but I don't see how that last ss is somehow unattainable on a hardware level.

But that was ingame. :p
dev confirmed it a while ago.

Actual quote...
Remeber the screenshot that surfaced from the GDC presentation? That was entirely real-time, in the engine, as in someone was actually playing the level(in fact I've played that level).

the pics above are old, wait until tgs bro.

This is realtime in game lol, this was taken from the July build.

I'm not drinking THAT koolaid bro. Lets see reality when the PS3 is out and the actual game is in hands.

Xbox 1 /360 had similar shenanigans. Awesome "pre release" build shots, then neutered when final.

Lots of times when devs, or marketing say a screen shot is in game, especially early in production, they mean "expected in-game quality".

actually I disagree. most likely the old screenshots / trailer was not prerendered CGI, but realtime running on highend PCs with SLI 7800 GTX, a graphics setup with much more rendering performance than RSX in PS3.

If it was running on a PC, then it was most likely just a tech demo. Usually there isn't a strong correlation between the looks of tech demos and the look of the real game. Either way.. I doubt the first screen shots were really 'in-game'.

here's movie from real-time taken at GDC. I've read somewhere that Lair is coming to PSP so maybe the first screenshot is from PSP version, but definitively not PS3.

Good point. Hopefully that is PSP.

Well, the first screenshot in the thread is at 1280x720 resolution, standard 720p that most PS3 games are expected to run at, and a far cry from the PSP's 480x272 resolution. Not to mention it looks a hell of a lot better than anything on the PSP could. The second and third screens are a *slight* possibility of being PSP screens, but again look far better than anything the PSP could churn out (does the PSP even support bump mapping like what was shown there?). So it's doubtful any of those screens are from the PSP version.

Otherwise, I'll just wait and see. Factor 5 has some pretty ridiculous technological talent (look at the Rogue Squadron games on the Gamecube), so I'm going to wait until we see the actual game running on actual PS3's before making judgement.
