With 360 bundles planned rather than pre-Christmas price cut

The Premium Xbox 360 won’t benefit from a price cut this Christmas - but instead a HD-DVD and console package is due, spearheading a marketing drive of console bundles available from November.

Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (293 Euro), and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (589 Euro) – and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (552 Euros).

Next-generation movie support is considered a unique selling point of the PlayStation 3, but Microsoft’s HD-DVD bundle could retail around GBP 50 (74 Euro) cheaper than Sony’s machine, which features the rival Blu-ray movie format.

UK distributor Gem is already offering Premium Xbox 360s with a copy of Project Gotham Racing 3 and two wireless controllers for GBP 299.

It’s expected an official Premium bundle will be made available in early November, with a newly released triple-A third-party title included.

Microsoft recently reduced the price of the Xbox 360 Core package, after many retailers had already taken a similar intiative.

With the pressure to compete with Sony over the Christmas market no longer a threat for Europe, Microsoft looks set to capitalise with a range of SKUs to help grow its installed base in the region.

Microsoft did not respond to requests for comment.

Put the 293 Euro price to us dollars..
293 Euro = 375.33300 U.S. dollars according to google.
Then consider this is VAT price, knock off 17.5% aprox.
82.5% of 375.33300 = 309.649725, which puts it at around a $299 US price tag.

It's best to wait for more official confirmation though.

If the HD-DVD add-on is indeed $299 US then they can keep it. As of right now I find that regular DVD movies still look great. Maybe in about a year I'll change my mind.

Well I've seen some HD-DVDs and they look awesome. Since my 360 will be like a year old purchase by the HD-DVD player comes out, spending 299 isnt that bad. Also the hd-dvd addon is a lot smaller than buying a standalone HD-DVD player, which are huge. So I still might pick this up.

Only for movies.
QFT. As per MS it will be used strictly for HD movies only.

I wouldn't buy it if it were $5.

Oh and now HD-DVD player is almost 300€ and who still consider PS3 overpriced? Not only PS3 is cheaper then Xbox360+HD-DVD but you get larger HDD which you can exchange for any standard 2,5" HDD, memory card reader and Wi-Fi not to mention HDD output. What's more you'll be able to fight against this this giant enemy crab and attact its weak point for massive damage!!! (nana2) Only on PS3 exclusively!!!

But seriously Xbox 360 + HD-DVD isn't elegant solution and it takes so much space. Why does Microsoft bother 'bout it anyway :thumbdwn:

Shame it's still not on the market while i'll be busy playing Gears of War and Pro Evolution 6, Dead Rising, Saints Row and tons of others.

Another thing is, I don't want Blu-Ray, i'd go for HD-DVD regardless ....even if I buy a PS3 simply for the fact it has more backing already.

What a ripoff!! You can sometimes find a rebadged Toshiba HD-A1 by RCA at Wal-Mart for $280!!! By the time decent blue-ray players come out, $280 will probably be the norm for the 1st gen HD-DVD player.

Er, Blu-Ray has far more studio and manufacturer backing then HD-DVD... HD-DVD might have better backing in the publics eye but by industry backing Blu-Ray is superior...

Things are edging more towards even every day. BR has more backing because Sony owns a lot of studios and is trying to buy their way to winning the format war. HD is about technology, not smoke and mirrors and promises of triple layer discs.

I agree, they're being gay like Sony trying to turn a console into a 3rd rate movie player.

True but the difference is that Xbox 360 owners have a choice in the matter.

That's a crazy price for what is just an USB external drive (and read only, too).

I was thinking about buying one if it was in the 150-200€ range but no way I'm going to spend nearly as much as another Xbox!!!

300 for something that's bound to the 360 just defeats the purpose.

Wow! There's no way I'll spend that much. Sheesh, if this is true it makes the PS3 look like a deal.

Premium 360 $400 + HDDVD $300 (Can't be used for games) = $700 (20GB Hard Drive)
Premium PS3 $600 + Blu-Ray $0 (Used for games and movies) = $600 (60GB Hard Drive)

Geez. Now that I think about it. I feel like Microsoft ripped me off. We've all been bamboozled!

Premium 360 $400 + HDDVD $300 (Can't be used for games) + Wi-Fi $100 + Online Gaming $50 = $850
-20GB Hard Drive
-No HDMI
-No 1080p support

-1xHDMI
-1080p support
-Can install any 2.5" HD

The addon part of a hd-dvd is a fudge. It might be cheaper than HD-DVD players, but if it doesn't come in one package as a "bonus feature" then I can't see the consumer liking having to fork out for an addon he doesn't want or need yet. It smells like a 32X with VCD movie playing abilities to me.
