Windows sees the burner, the BIOS sees the burner, but the firmware program can't see the burner. Also, in the readme of the firmware program, it says to disable DMA... how do I do this exactly? I can't change it in BIOS cause the setting wont stick, it just goes back to DMA mode 2 no matter what I do.

I've got winxp and its a Ricoh MP9120

you sure you need to update it?

I've heard of some firmware updates for burners that are incredibly shoddy, to say the least (reduce compatibility with different types of media, increase CPU utilization, etc.). And if it works... uhhhhh.... leave it the hell alone ;)

Have you tried the program mtkflash? You have to use it from a command prompt (just use a Windows 98 boot disk) but it's done the job perfectly for both my Lite-On and Plextor burners.

You can visit the forums at CD Freaks (http://club.cdfreaks.com) for more information.

I remember to have had problems when flashing my drive too. The only way I was able to recognize the drive was to enter bios and disable the opposite IDE channel the recorder was attached too. Also I flashed it from pure MS-DOS mode.

i always use mtkflash, works pretty much perfectly, and even restores dead burners :)

ive overclocked my recent Lite-Ons successfully with it, currently using a 48x24x48x with the latest 52x24x52x firmware, works perfectly....

cd-freaks should help you..
