View Full Version : So, now that RC1 is out, do DX9 games run better on Vista or what?

It isn't negative speculation, it's basic computers architecture.

I downloaded & tried RC1 too. I did some gaming tests, & the most memory demanding game that i had (Battlefield 2), was causing a lot of disk swapping in my system. Basically, RC1 turned my actual system into my old AthlonXP + 1GB ram + 6800U.

I hope that this changes with final release of Vista, or i'll need 4GB to do the same.

Battlefield 2 is a memory hog by itself. The games that I've tried(that runs), run fine(albeit slower) even though the OS takes up half my ram. Most applications are not as memory demanding.

BF2 is the single reason I upgraded from 1gig to 2gig. I think this is true for a lot of gamers too.

Not a good example!

Sure, I think I know where you are coming from, but you are over-doing it a bit. Even being a Release Candidate, I'd bet there is not only some debug code left that will probably not be in there once released, there are optimizations that are probably awaiting as well, afterall, the final consumer release is still several months away.

Some tests from RC2. Don't worry, it only uses 1.1GB of RAM now. :thumbdwn:

A fresh install of Windows Vista Ultimate will hog over 1GB of system memory - just to run. This screenshot was taken at first boot and from there, the memory usage only climbed until it stabilized at a mere 1.11GB - almost 28% of our system's memory. Granted there is still 2.89GB free, but out of the box Vista is a RAM pig.

2) 2GB of memory will be enough to keep all of today's games running quite smoothly. However, in light of Battlefield 2, and the Battlefield 2142 Demo taking up over 1.8GB of a 2GB system, there isn't much room left for other programs running in the background.

That's exactly what happened in my system with BF2. A lot of disk swapping again.

Playing CoH and Vista uses 1.8 megs of my 2 megs Ram!!!!

Hehe, sure you dont mean Gigs?
If Vista runs on 2mb RAM its not as heavy as one would think..

Anyway, its pretty sluggish over here, even with Aero off.. cant figure that one out, both IE and Firefox scrolling up and down lags and everything is pretty slow.. Must be some setting or something..

Graphics performance is most likely chalked up to poor drivers atm tho.
Especially opengl, 96.33 even sais "Includes OpenGL driver for compatibility testing."

This is *very* interesting. It seems like the memory usage of Vista is *very* dynamic!
I've made a few tests myself and after a fresh install, memory usage is pretty much exactly 450MB. I have 2GB of RAM.

sooooo... Vista use:
1.1GB of 4GB ~25%
and
450MB of 2GB ~25%

Pretty cool. This would imply that the feeling of speed using Vista and the level of disk swapping will decrease by increasing memory. Nice. I'll have to make a test with 1GB RAM now. :D

yeah so basically all the people complaining about it's memory usage should stfu. it's taking advantage of how much ram is in your system for example I have tried it with only 1 GB of RAM and memory usage is about 512 MB.

I did the tests in my system, & it had nothing of dynamic. There's a lot of disk swapping while you play BF2 & that's the reason why a lot of people upgraded to 2GB. Now we need 4GB to do the same :thumbdwn:

Your system must be different than everyone else's that's done this test? Definitely different enough to make Vista perform so abnormally for you. I have 2gig and am not seeing the swapping with BF2.

Heck, no doubt it should be expected, if trend is any indicator, that as time goes on, system requirements go up. This really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

Then again, stay with the old hardware and software but just don't complain when your system is too slow to run the latest software.

Really, how else can you look at it?

I thought Vista was suppose to unload its memory space when a game is launched...

Might want to make sure it has nothing to do with vista's new defrag.
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060720-7319.html

Supposedly it's set to run at a scheduled time, but I believe another article, which of course I can't find:o mentioned it something like diskeepers set and forget feature. Which means it's constantly defragging.

If this is the case and you've got vista on a small partition this could be where your disc thrashing is coming from.

Just a guess as my system is fast as heck with vista and only uses 450- 800 of 2 gigs at any given time when not gaming.

Like I said, just a guess:)

I have ~550 megs used at boot (1gig total).

Disable some services and I can get it down to 400megs

Different settings in the game, mods, higher res, more AA, bigger maps, 64 players maps, .... makes the game tu suck more memory. It ranges from 1.2GB to 1.8GB in the task manager for BF2 in my system.

Of course, but, swapping 400-800MB of pages to disk, is slow.
