I have to ask why on earth door staff are allowed to carry pepper spray. It doesnt take much to break up a fight, kind of sucks that this happened when it could be avoided.:(

People are idiots, I'm afraid we all have to live with ourselves. :)

If that was a nerve agent then those people would have died regardless. So why run?

Door staff are allowed to carry pepper spray because it's a non-lethal deterrent that allows them to assume control of a person very quickly.

I used to work the door of a busy club, and our weapon was a 7 lb. Maglite flashlite with lead base. This sounds dangerous, but in actuality, you have to get within 4 feet of your adversary to use it.
This sounds good, until you have a pissed off person pull a concealed knife, or something worse like a zip gun and you have 10 seconds to gain control of the situation on your own. Sometimes you don't have time to wait for your co-workers to help you defuse a situation. Pepper spray gives you an attack radius of up to 10 feet. That's a world of difference in terms of self-defense.
It disables a person in less than 4 seconds, yet doesn't disfigure, cut, break bones or drop blood when you use it.
One of my good friends from college is now dead of a knife wound because he falsely assumed he was in control (with a Maglite) when he was NOT. Furthermore, the damage a lot of our more "enthusiastic" employees enacted on drunken and vocal (but non-violent) patrons was enough to make me quit my job.
Ever seen someone get hit so hard that their eye popped out onto their cheek? It's not fun.

Believe me, to the alternative, pepper spray is the best, most humane way to gain control of an adversary yet made, if it's used correctly by properly trained people.

If a situation arose that caused the security staff to use pepper spray, and people panicked causing patrons to be crushed and trampled, then i'd suggest an alternative culprit:
The club owners. If all of this stemmed from an altercation within a group of women, and not a coordinated action, then it's pretty obvious that the club was WAY OVERCROWDED beyond fire code limitations. Before you dismiss this, I can tell you for certain that two club owners that I worked for were guilty of this virtually every weekend.

Here we have regulated Door staff, they have to be licensed to work the doors. If any trouble happens at least 3 of them rush the person and turf them out without any trouble. If a person gets into a place with a weapon then the door policys have to be looked at. People should be randomly searched(I've been searched myself before). Plus with door staff the size of the ones that are around here not many people start anything:D

Club presence for security definitely acts as a "silent partner" in deterring potential violence.

But like I said, a nightclub (especially a larger one like i worked at) isn't the most stable and secure environment to begin with.
You don't always have the luxury of another security buddy to help in a situation that can explode in under 15 seconds. Even when you have a mic and a wire on you to call for backup.
This is never more true than in an overcrowded club. You can call them, and they're instantly on alert, but they have to GET THROUGH ALL THE PEOPLE to get where you are. Even when they move fast and shove people out of the way as quickly as they can, it could already be too late.

And we searched people, but time and again, someone had a way of getting around it.
This is also another thing worth thinking about. In an urban environment, people (especially women) are encouraged to carry "mace" for self defense. I don't know about now, but back then it was normal practice to let these patrons in the door if they had it on them, because it was considered a non-lethal defensive weapon. I imagine that was one of the contributing factors in this situation, where a patron struck with mace first and everything snowballed from there.

But of course it could be an "over-enthusiastic" employee too.
Very sad situation, nontheless.

Ya a sad situation to be sure. The bouncers used very poor judgement for letting loose the mace in a enclosed crowded club like that. Very sad indeed. :(

Just heard that the 2nd floor where the party was was not even supposed to be open due to violations in the city codes...

I doubt that club will stay open for very long with those two facts facing the owners.

We can tell who's never seen women fight before. I'd rather get into a fight with three men that are larger than me (which isn't that hard) over one female who is smaller.
