The chip is just about same like the early Pentium 4, only it cost much less. Mass production is already underway.
So what do you think about that? Could we all one day be using the Chinese CPU ?
No more Intel or AMD fanboys :)
China develops computer chip to compete with Pentium 4

Sep. 15, 2006 (China Knowledge) (http://www.chinaknowledge.com/news/news-detail.aspx?id=4319) – The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) yesterday announced that it has developed a new computer chip that is the equivalent of the Intel Pentium 4 processor, State media reported yesterday.

The reports quoted Li Guojie, director of the Institute of Computer Technology under the CAS, as saying that the newly-upgraded generic 64-bit CPU chip Longxin IIE had been accredited by experts on Wednesday and is next only to processors made in the U.S. and Japan.

According to developers, official tests show that the chip can rival the early-series Intel Pentium 4 processor in performance but can be produced at a much lower cost.

The new chip, which is the size of two thumbs, has 47 million transistors – more than the 40 million that the Pentium 4 has – but only has a power consumption ranging from three watts to eight watts. Its highest frequency can reach 1.0 GHz and at peak speeds it can do up to 4 billion calculations per second under a dual accuracy check.

Li told newspapers that mass production of the Longxin IIE chips is currently underway and the chips will be available for sale on the market before the end of the year. According to Li, the chip has already been put into several low-cost computers helping the company to cut costs by 50%.

Meanwhile, work is underway for the next Longxin chip. “Our target is to improve performance by about 30% and reduce power consumption by about 50%,” Li said adding that he hoped CAS’ work would allow China to be ranked among the flagship microprocessor producers.
PS Not even sure if this should have been posted in rumors.

wasn't that discovered to be a fraudulous rebranding of the P4 a few months ago?

so what? via has new competitionWell I'm not sure if VIA is selling many chips in China.
But did read that AMD and Intel is fighting for market share in China by selling mainly the low end CPU there, so it might effect them most.

Well, as usual it is actually a MIPS CPU. So they didn't develop anything, just copy!

sound like high quality chips, made in china and compared to the p4 :p

It's 95% MIPS compatible. Just a MIPS rip-off.
