i'm thinking on buying GeForce fx 6600 or geforce fx 6600 GT and someone told me that if i buy one of them i better get the 128mb and not the 256 mb because it's better.
is that true?

That's exactly how many card makers want you to think. More RAM != better. A GeForce 6600 won't benefit from having more onboard memory because the GPU doesn't have the bandwidth available to cope with it. A 128 MB 6600 GT with its higher clock speeds will outperform a 256 MB vanilla 6600 in the vast majority of situations. The only time you'd ever see a difference is at high resolutions with lots of AA and AF thrown in, and at that point, both cards are too slow to be playable in the first place.

To the original poster, I would first get your system RAM up to at least 1 GB before investing in a video card. Then a 128 MB 6600 GT will be more than enough for that system. Or, if you can find one, a vanilla 128 MB GeForce 6800 (not GT or Ultra) would be a good choice as well and should be available on the cheap.
