R600 will be the hottest chip ever, consume around 250W. With Crossfire setup, you are look at around 500W, I dont think many people will buy it for Crossfire setup as they have to pay for higher electricity bill. It probably will have CPU style heatsink cooler and will be ready for January/February 2007 launch.
gawd, 1800, why must you always post bad news about ATI?... if the r600 is going to consume that must what make you think the g80 isnt going to be near that also?.

Don't hate the messenger just because the message is bad. ;)

Lol, I was just gonna post this article before I saw he did.:D
Well, we had that article about G80 coming with an external PSU so I wouldn't doubt both cards need a lot of juice........sigh, as if I needed more heat in my room.:(
Yea, G80 will probably consume just as much!

The October issue of Maximum PC says that 300 watts may even be possible for these next gen cards. I knew my 1KW was a good investment.:D

Gee this is going insane, they need to focus on performance-per-watt ratio, i'd rather have a less performant card if it has an acceptable power consumption. Look at via chips for instance, they have an incredible ratio. ofcourse we're talking about another champioship here, but working with limited resources clearly leads to creativity and innovation, plus with this power growing rate they'll have to start thinking about it sometime in future, so I think they should start right now imposing limits to themselves.

Here is an idea...
When the 250W cards come out, we could just not buy them. Heh.

So what's the problem ? The 500 Watts XFire or SLI should be able to heat up a small room.
In couple years the 8 cores Graphic Cards should be able to replace the house furnace :)
Edit
PS
For the guys who need external power supply go ahead and buy one.
Please don't force me to also buy one, with every new Graphic Card. Thanks.

The Canadian winter is coming, so let me manage and worry about one thing at time. :)
Yes videocards are going to become very good heaters. As the wattage kranks up to new highs so will the heat. I expect a new market to come to light. People will view the videocard as two products in one. A heater for people in cold climates and faster video.
So people in the north can turn down their thermostat. People in the south will need to turn up the air conditioners.
By 2020 a small power station will be required as your new powersource.

This is good news to me, I thought it would be 300w.:headbang:
Makes me not re-think about buying a R600.:D

I just upgraded from a Enermax 350W to a Fortron 450W just so I could go from a 6800GT AGP to a 7900GT PCI-E. Why would I need a 750-1000W so I could go to a 8x00GT in the future?
Jesus, sooner or later we are going to need an entirely seperate case for these cards.
ATI and nVidia are going to burn themselves out at this rate. Literally and metaphorically.
This chip is sounding like its gonna be a monster. Cant wait.

Here is the direction for video cards. Take a peek at this. ;)

Same here. My 1KW enermax PSU saves me moeny aswell ^_^.

That article has my poor brain in a spin. First they say 250 now 180 now it had triple slot cooling.:retard:
Back in the 70s, a computer use to take up whole floors, not just rooms. Eventually, PC's got smaller and progressively faster.
Why does it seem the videocard industry has everything backwards, and instead is making things bigger and less efficient each product cycle?
Pretty soon (maybe 2010) we'll each need our own little power generator just to run Unreal Tournament 2010 with an nVidia G1000.:rw:

No, I'm predicting it'll peak- much like what we saw happen with the CPU. Either nVidia or ATi will release a GPU that just gobbles up power- like the P4 did, and the competitor will release a GPU that doesn't use up nearly as much power while performing as well or better. And from then forward efficiency and low power usage will be the key push from both companies.
